hybrid between monacledxmozambique?

JMILLR2101 Jan 02, 2004 05:37 PM

Is it possible or has anyone ever tried to inter-breed them? I was looking to buy 1 of each and all my friends said that it would be cool to have a monacled that spit! Personally I wouldn't want one but was wondering if it was possible?

It would probably be possible to produce some live babies from a breeding between these two species, but the likelihoods are slim. Most of your eggs would probably be infertile. And besides, why would you want to cross a monocled with a spitter to make it spit? It's pretty well documented already that kaouthia is capable of spitting. I've never had any specimens do it, but I know people who have. Best bet is to just leave them pure. The cross would not result in any spectacular, as both species are rather drab. And if it's albinos you're thinking of, the albino genes certainly wouldn't carry over into the first generation and because of the species separation they probably wouldn't even show up after further line breeding, as the genes may not be very compatable.

I have 3 adult atra crosses,
the only reason I see for a hybid is to produce a "better"?)
more interesting snake, the atra cross isnt it...grey no hood markings(on 2 of them)nothing special.
in this day of limiting imports,we need to concentrate on pure species,or we will end up with nothing but sterile "mules".
just my opinion,no offence is intended

Might be difficult. The Asians and African cobras are actually quite distantly related. There have been reports of high rates of deformity after crosses between species even within the Asiatics (kaouthia x naja), so I suspect that mossambica x kaouthia might not work at all.

Also, cobras are not at all adverse to a snack of snake, so providing a non-conspecific mate might turn into providing a meal.

Just as well, in my hybrid-unfriendly view.

Cheers,

Wolfgang
