No, it won't damage the screen, but be careful if you have a glass tank with plastic edges - i've royally warped the plastic by melting it.

I dont know what you mean by the plastic edges.Do you mean like the black plastic border on the top and bottom of the tank?
That's the stuff. I've got a big blobby wobble in both the rim around the edge and the middle dividing strip. All because I wasn't careful when I was shifting my lights around.
