Translucent

paulmorlock Jan 02, 2004 07:31 PM

Happy New Year everyone! Just figured I would post a newer pic of the tranlucents for some that haven't seen them yet. Both of these animals are missing almost all of the white and have jet black eyes and seem to be coloring out pretty nicely. let me know what you think.

Those are some cool looking dragons! The one on top looks like he does not have any of the body spikes on his side. Is it just the picture or does he really have no spikes?

paulmorlock Jan 02, 2004 07:56 PM

It's just the picture.

Paul,

How old are these pictured above now?

Are the parents harder to breed, like some hypo's are, the same or easier?

Is the fertile, hatch rate the same?

Actually what I am curious about, do you see any difference in any other characteristics including eating, growing, etc, besides the lessen or lack of white pigment?

These two look good, kinda like a little sunburn from a day at the beach, but healthy and growing

They are 5 month old translucents produced from hets from the "Sandfire" line. They reproduce just as normal dragons do with the same hatch rates. This year will be the first breeding of translucent to translucent. I will hopefully breed that male to a hypo-trans female from one of my bloodlines. Fortunatly our bloodlines are completely unrelated and I'm soooooo looking forward to the results. I personally have not experienced any difference in growth or behavior from these or my hypo translucents as a whole,in fact my hypo- translucents seem to grow exceptionaly well and both of my adult females are huge. My first female dropped 31 fertile eggs her first time round and now averages 33 with a 95% hatch rate. Although Josh (dragon keeper for Sandfire) told me in his experience his animals didn't do as well in natural sunlight and seemed to grow a little slower over all. However his results could be related some what to husbandry. I am in no way saying he doesn't take care of his animals but this year was the first year either one of us actually reproduce these animals and I think one season of offspring is not enough to get accurate idea of the viability of this trait. We have taken great care in trying to spread the trait into as many different bloodlines as possible over the past two years. I personally have definate hets in 5 seperate bloodlines and will be able to breed unrelated hypo-trans hets this season(with thier cooperation of course).

to how they do and what offspring they have. This should be an interesting year for several people with some of the colonies they have built up.

I don't think I have seen a year before that so many people have unusual morphs to work with PLUS working with unrelated lines!

We will be working with pale yellow dragons and some big ones, I already promised Christyj a GG baby, I think its the only way we are going to get her to stop talking about them.. oops, maybe that WON'T work!

Paul, have you ever seen a blue eyed dragon? We have one that has blue/green eyes called Myst(the color of sea mist), unfortunately she had a serious prolapse at 5 months old and so I will not breed her ever. Her parents where both amber eyed.

Her eyes are black in the center(pupil) then the iris starts out green/gold and goes to blue/green and then a large black area before it goes to the white... very strange

I will try and get a recent one when the camera is fixed... I am going crazy missing all these great pictures of the babies and CC just shed to a bright gold with purple and I want to get a pic to Joel of her... she has the most vivid bright colors of any of the dragons.

She is always that color, just a very happy spoiled gal

Awww - Myst is a little beauty!
I rescued a dragon with similar eyes this summer. Here is a pic of him, it is not the best pic of his eyes, but you can see that the color is a bit unusual.

Looking forward to new pictures (get those batteries noooow!

Gunilla, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I've been so busy and haven't been on the forum in a while!! Take care, Jo

paulmorlock Jan 03, 2004 11:01 AM

Yes, some of the translucent hets had eyes as babies that were a very light blue/green color. They changed as they got older. They are now the light gold with black rings around the iris. I figured they look blue/green because of the extra mealan in the eyes.

Does anyone know why this happen? Are they bred like this or was it a mutation from the beginning? After all it is not "normal"..! Just curious!
-----

paulmorlock Jan 03, 2004 11:15 AM

The black eye trait as you can see is not nacessarly a part of the translucent trait, it can happen in normal animals also, and is not really that new. If you read some of the old dragon care information you will find that Bob Mallioux and Philippe de Vosjoi mention eye colors being red, gold and black a number of years ago.

Thanks for the info about black eyes! Interesting. But what I actually meant was if the transculent dragon is a mutation or if it is bred?
-----

paulmorlock Jan 03, 2004 12:24 PM

It was originally a mutation that popped up in a handful of animals and we have since bred them out to create hets and then bred the hets back together to get the translucents you are seeing now.
