One Tank Misting System . . . an education

Homer1 Jan 02, 2004 07:33 PM

Well, I did get the automated misting system put together today. Grand total for the windshield washer pump and AC/DC transformer (1 amp): ~$30. The rest of the components you should be able to get for around $10. Of course, you're going to need a digital timer for this bad boy, and that will run you between $10-$20. So, you could pull this whole thing off for between $40-$60 (because you could definitely get the pump and transformer cheaper elsewhere, but I was in a hurry).

The drawback with my particular pump is that it doesn't seem to be able to self prime, so I have to keep the reservoir above or at the same level as the pump, and the sprayer does best when it is no more than 20" above the pump. If you're just planning on doing one tank (as I currently am), his saves some money from the wetworks or big apple systems, but if you are doing multiples, it just makes sense to buy the systems from the pros. Eventually, I will probably have one of those. For now, this works well for me. You could power up to 3 mister nozzles from this setup, but I'm only going to use 2 (at least that's my current plan).

It's really simple. If you guys want details, let me know, and I'd be willing to post pics later. For now, I'm going to start in on my background, etc. so that I might be able to have this terrarium up and ready for the vents by Sunday.

I used a universal windshield washer pump from AutoZone manufactured by Taap, and having a model number of 9-300. I used a 12 V 1000 mA transformer from Wal-Mart, but after conversing with an orchid grower who used the same setup, I should probably find a 2 amp transformer for optimum pumping power. With the current setup, the pump won't self-prime, but will spray sufficiently if the water reservoir is above the pump.

I'm using a barr's system misting system on top of all of that. Otherwise, there's really not much to explain, other than making sure you have the polarity right when you wire the transformer to the motor.

Best of luck,

Kyle,

Here's a pic of all the components needed for a misting setup: windshield washer pump (I bought a universal model--Taap 9-300), AC converter (you'll need a 12 volt 2 amp setup . . . this one is underpowered at one amp, so I have a 3 amp unit coming); misting nozzles, tubing, and connectors; a reservoir for water (this is a 1 gallon reservoir, which should last me about a month per fill); and a digital timer (not shown).

I got some specs from a guy running an identical setup for orchids. He's using a 1.8 amp transformer, and has 3 nozzles going very well. He mists for 1 minute every day, and has had good luck with this setup which has been running since September.

Here's a pic of how the unit will be mounted to the terrarium--view from above.

Here's a pic of my vent terarrium after being hardscaped. It's just a quick snapshot, and the lighting is awful. I'll post more pics when it starts looking better with plants added.

Looks good man. You adding plants soon?

I just added some of my eco earth weldbond to my new tank, but will have to wait to add the rest. I will take some pics when it has all been added.

I'm adding some plants right now. I have a few broms on the way from a trade I just did, and I'm probably going to order a few from Ken at Peace of the Tropics when I get my next paycheck.

I have 2 jewel orchids, 2 ephiphytic miniature orchids, and a fern, and a Neo. liliputiana x fireball that I plan on adding tonight.

I know, I bought most of my broms from Alex (at Custom Ecos) the first time. Can you believe I got a jewel orchid (actually 2 in one pot) for $5 from there? I think I actually gave you this same web address a while back! LOL! No, I would definitely recommend Alex, as I had a very good experience with my order, and the plants were top notch.

Ken just has a few broms that I am drooling over, at decent prices, so I think I'll be placing my order there . . . if I have any space left after my trade comes in.

Both are great, but both have different things.

I have bought from Alex since day one, since he goes to the local show, but I have also bought from the others also.

One of you guys mentioned trying to find out the model number off a misting pump and yada yada. Well, I tried that road about a year ago, and it led me nowhere. It seems that these pumps are OEM parts, and you would have to buy in volume (100 or more) and also send in an OEM application. So, it's not worth it. You're better off just biting the bullet and getting a decent system.

Not to change the subject, but I have a question that I have been meaning to ask. I have a 10 gal. ZooMed tank heater that I bought last year. It came off the glass, and it won't stick to it anymore because it isn't as sticky, plus it's somewhat warped. Is there any way I can stick it back on? Thanks

Kathy
