Question about Vision cages

paxerisia Jan 02, 2004 09:13 PM

I was reading on Bluetegu.com that a tegu can be kept in a large Vision cage (the 6x3 one). I have Vision cages, and I know that you can really only have about 3-4 inches of substrate in one. How do you modify a Vision cage so that you can have a deeper substrate? I tried doing this once for my monitor, but it didn't work out so well.

Thanks.

If you wanted to keep more than 3-4 inches of mulch in a vision cage you could have a piece of plexi glass cut to fit the cage and attached it to the front of the cage . This would keep the mulch from slidding into the tracks.

There really is no need to do this though.Less than 3 inches of mulch in the bottom of the cages is plenty (these cages maintain humidity nicely ) . I rarely have more than that in any of my indoor cages but I do stuff the hideboxes full of mulch . For me I find that we tend to keep the cages cleaner and change the mulch more often if there isn't so much of it in the cage =)

i was thinking about getting the 6'x3' Vision also, this is my first tegu, he's about 17" total, so i'm not sure what would be the best set up for him in the Vision

should i get the extra vent installed for a 18" light? a heating pad inside? hide box near the light on one side and food on the cooler side?

any help would be great, he's outgrown the home he's in now so i want to move him into something more comfortable soon

I had extra vents installed on the sides when I used these cages. I attached sigle tube 4 foot light fixtures to the back wall of the cages to hold the UVB bulbs just below the vents and drilled a small hole in the back of the cage to run the cord out . I found the 4' fixtures where alot less expensive in the long run when it came time to replacing the bulbs and they put out a lot more light .

As far as heat goes you have to judge that on your own as everyones ambient temperatures are different . One hallogen spot was enough heat in Florida so we don't need to use an heat tape mats etc. If room temperatures are not dropping in the low 70 or less at night there is no need for any kind of heat at night .. if your temps drop cooler than that you might have to use it otherwise they won't eat .
