All water tank

tetrafish2 Jan 03, 2004 02:42 AM

Some people put horned frogs in an all-water setup, but where would the cool/warm sides be if the frogs is submerged in all water and a UTH is used? But, if I use a coconut fiber substrate instead, where should the water bowl be? On the warm side or the cool side..or does it even matter? Thanks!

I don't think an allwater setup is good, because the frogs love to burrow, and it deprives them of this. These frogs need a few inches of substrate to burrow themselves in.

PACman frogs are NOT meant to be in water all the time. All they really need is bed-a-beast, and a shallow bowel of water for soaking. Keep bed-a-beast slightly moist.

DO NOT use an under the tank heater for frogs-it can dry out and even BURN the animal (remember they burrow and will be in direct contact with the heating elements and lie on it for hours, even days. ALl you have to do is keep a small lamp (with a nocturnal bulb) overhead.

It would be cruel to subject them to water all the time. They also like burrowing and staying on land, soaking just sometimes.

Also pac mans urinate and poo in the water a lot-conditions that can cause red leg.

Since the frogs bury themselves to avoid the heat coming from above, it would be unwise to provide both over-tank and under-tank heat. Frogs have no need for heat pads! A heat lamp, or even merely being in a warm room, is fine.

All water tanks arent good for pac mans. Use a substrate that can retain moisture like eco-earth or bed a beast. The water bowl should be on the cooler side or in the middle.

I use bed-a-beast and i keep it pretty darn moist...

Should I let it dry out more? My albino cannot stand his waterbowl. Even if the substrate is completely dry he wont go in it. So I started keeping his bedabeast moist all the time.

I have concerns for disease, but I havent had any problems of yet. I remove the poop every time they go, but I cant filter our urine. I rcompleely remove the substrate once a month and clean the cage otu then replace it.

Should I change what i do and let it dry out? Or should I keep up with what I have going?

I always thought pacmans wanted to be moist allt he time.
