Leo lost tail due to cat attack...m

Sohni Jan 03, 2004 12:00 PM

My 8 month old leo, George, lost his beautiful tail this morning due to an attack by one of our cats. I am just crushed--I feel so terrible for the little guy, and it's all my fault. The cat wasn't supposed to be in the room, but the door got left open, blah, blah, blah. I should have put him in a more secure location (which is where he is now). The moral of the story is, don't trust a cat, because cats are, well...cats. I love mine, but that's the last time I take any chances with them.

My question is: what's the best food to give a recuperating leo? His tail has been cleaned and treated, and he's on paper towels, but I want to feed him whatever's best. He eats gut-loaded mealies now, and he is (was) very fat and healthy.

P.S. Marcia, I got him from you in Sept. and I'm so sorry I was not more careful. He was just beautiful, too.

Losing a tail is very stressful to a Gecko, I would just continue to dust crickets once-twice a week and provide him with plenty of calcium in his cage. He will in time grow back a tail but it will look like his head.

I'm sorry to hear that happened. I'm glad it was nothing more serious! He will start to grow another one within a week. Just keep him on paper towel to prevent infection until you see the new one starting to regenerate. Make sure he's well fed and hydrated, and if you keep Neosporin on the stub throughout the re-grow process, sometimes it comes back nicer and less bulbous.
