Observations of 3 males in one enclosure (long)

paul kemes Jun 04, 2003 03:41 PM

Somebody asked me how my males are getting along and I sent this reply via email but thought others here might be interested in the response also. Please note that I keep Australian water dragons and I wouldn't generalize the behaviours to apply to green water dragons.
Yes, they are both males. I have 4 all together, it was hopefully going to be a 2:2 group, but it actually looks like I got three males and one female. So far they get along fine. Everybody gets plenty to eat which is the main thing. I have observed ALOT of head-bobbing. The female does some arm waving. I haven't observed any actual violence between males but I do see them do this charge thing. You know how a dolphin will ram a shark? Its kind of like that. One male will take a couple steps and nudge another with his snout. The mouth stays closed and there seems to be no harm, no signs of stress. It appears that they are just forming a hierarchy, but I don't know if the peace will last after cycling for breeding. One of the males will be getting a new home soon, even with no violent agrresion towards eachother, 3 males is too many. In the next couple weeks I will be getting 2 more potential females from Bert at Agamainternational which will make the group 2 males, 3 females. After cycling the group next winter they will all be moved into a new cage for breeding, but if the males get violent, I will pull one out. If your interested I'll keep you posted as to the interactions between the males.

i've read many articles about keeping bearded dragons and stuff housed together, and most people say as long as there are multiple basking spots and feeding areas they will be fine as long as they don't have to fight for these things it will keep stress down.
