Some questions...

ex_action_figure Jan 03, 2004 01:21 PM

I havent really been able to find the ansers for these questions...

I am setting up a 30 gallon long vivarium
and I was wondering what and how many dart frogs can I keep in there? I saw someone had 3 dendrobates azureus in a 10 gallon so I was thinking 3 dendrobates azureus and 3 dendrobates leucomelas-what do you think? will they get along? is that a good number? what should I do for male to female ratio? I dont really plan on breeding them
I was also wondering how people secure wood to the backs of there tanks? I plan on using ghost wood and I want to make a tank that rivals those on blackjungle.com

1. Mixing is not a good idea, and most people will agree. For a 30gal a few leucs would be nice, say 4-6. I think leucs and Azureus can cross, which is not a good idea.

2. Azureus: it is not a good idea to keep 2 females together, they can kill each other. So a pair or so would be good.

I have both and I have my Azureus in a 29gal tank, they are doing great, and always out. Don't worry about numbers, but the quality of life for the frogs. You can get a pair of Azureus for $160-250, they are very nice frogs. On the other hand you can find some Leucs for about $25-45. Both are good starter frogs.

What are the consequences of mixing these two species?
I dont plan on breeding. Are there any species that can be mixed. I have heard of people keeping small geckos as well. Also I have heard reed frogs. What are your opinions on this?
If i got D.Azureus how many should I put in my 30 gallon long if that was the only species I was keeping with what male/female ratio?
Thanks

I would not mix any, and most others do not as well. Thats not to say it has not been done, but there is just too many problems. If you have a very large tank you could have frogs that would live at the top, and others that would live at the bottom, but 30gal is not enough for that in my opinion.

You can do 2-3males to 1 female with azurues in a 30gal. Most breeders only offer froglets so you may not be able to sex them. Some are offering pairs of azureus.

In my 30 gal tank I keep 3 males and 1 female azureus comfortably.

sounds good-now what do I do if I don't know the sexes of the frogs? what if I get 4 females or something?

I would personally go with the leucs. You can house more in the 30 gallon, you can get them in varying shades of yellow to orange (even out of the same clutch), and they have tons of personality. I personally find these to be better starter forgs than my tincs . . . much less transfer stress.

Good luck,

Good point Homer, my Azureus took a long time to get used to the tank, now they are very bold, but not at first. Now my leucs were always out at first.

i think it all depends on the breeder because my azureus were out on the seconed day looking for food and have always been really bold. these were also my first frogs

I first started out with getting two frogs and waiting till they grew up to be sexed. It was luck that they both ended up being males and then later on I purchased a pair.
