C. Mitratus help

antonm Jan 03, 2004 01:21 PM

I just got a coleonyx mitratus from a friend. He is in a 10 gallon tank with coconut mulch and plants. Humidity is roughly 40-60 and temps stay around 80. In my observation, the thing sleeps a whole lot. I come home, it comes out of the coconut, looks at me, goes back in and lays down to sleep again. Sometimes I come home when its late, and its in the middle of the cage sleeping. Its supposed to hunt at night but it just chills. It looks dead half the time, so I poke it and it gets up and stares at me like "why did you just do that". It does not seem sick as its reaction times are very quick and it eats and so forth. It has a fairly thick tail. Has anyone else noticed this with the species? Another thing, it always squints its eyes. There are times when it opens them all the way to eat or just gaze into the tree for no reason but mainly it just squints. Is this normal? It seems like its trying to do the minimal amount of work possible or something. Does this seem right or do I just have a really lazy gecko? Pictures available from any angle upon request (takes time to convert). Thanks in advance.

I keep about 10 of these little guys and some are skitish but my older geckos do the same of just chillin in the center of the cage even when i walk into the room, i think they have got use to the life of captivity, also some times they act that way if the humity is to low or high but it sound like you have the cage at a nice level for these little gecks. As long as he/she eats and like you says has a fat tail it sounds like nothing is wrong with it. Watch out though if it's color fades it could have nurtion problems make sure to dust all food before hand.

Cool, good to hear it. When I first got it the color was a little dark but now its becoming more contrasted so I think I'm doing good. I'll keep an eye out for humidity and other issues. It is kind of wierd how he/she squints though...I guess its just an eyelid gecko thing.
