Kirtland Snakes

HerpHelmz Jan 03, 2004 01:21 PM

**I Need to correct myself**
Kirtland Snakes eat earthworms, slugs and sometimes chopped fish in captivity. They will refuse to eat frogs, toads and salamanders. They average in length from about 10 to 16 inches but they sometimes reach 2 feet. They are live-bearers and give birth to about 14 young. They are harmless to people they won't usually bite, but if they do bite, they chew once they get a good grip.

As far as I understand the dietary habits you have discussed are indeed correct. For the longest time the species was considered closely related to North American Watersnakes but is now believed to be closer related to red belly, brown (Dekay), and lined snakes...It is sad that this species is not worked with on a larger scale (if it is even legal to...because so far I have been unable to find out whether or not it is even legal for a hobbiest to obtain specimens)...it is a pretty little species.

I hope to get one sometime but from what I read, they are no longer common here in Pennsylvania. It's a shame. Such a pretty snake.
