Interesting Garter Snake

I found this little guy coming out from under my front steps in CT. He was probably about 16 - 20 inches long. I have never seen a brown one like this. Let me know what you think.

Thats a very interesting looking garter! Sometimes they get stained by tanin or iron deposits in water. Did you get a sense that this might be the case here? It would be great to see additional photos. The snake may well live there (under the steps) - keep that camera handy!

Here's a pic of a "stained" water snake I took earlier this year. You can see that the lower portion of its body has been soaking in iron ladened water.
