rc_racer_007 Jan 03, 2004 03:04 PM

Heres my tank after 6 months (well close to it) of growth. Iv had to move a couple things around. Some plants died, some are doing great.

from 7/18/03

From 01/03/04 - the moss aint dying, flash just washed it out.

I got some moss and a wierd plant growing on my rock on the left hand side behind the piece of wood.

I got more pictures in the link below. (my sig) I didnt want to post all of them and slow down the board.

Well i got mossman's tropical pillow moss in all of my tank. Its wierd though. Some of it grows like in little star parts like the close up shot of the moss on the rock. And other portions of his moss will grow runner type things.

As for the moss on the rock. I didnt do nothing to the rock. I just boiled it for about 5 minutes and stuck it in there. I guess it natural growth. Its got somekinda plant on it. I dont think its a fungous/mold (unless someone else knows?) and i got another little plant that looks leafy spourting up next to the glass so i cant see it very well. Theres all kinda of little suprises in a vivarium. And some nasty little creatures too.

I didnt realize my broms had grown so much.

Well it does look good, it is neat the little things that grow in tanks. I have a few odd ones too. So where are the frogs in that tank?

in the broms. They set inthe broms for a good part of the day. They are out for hours during the morning then retreat to the broms and wonder out spuratically. Until i dump some flies in then they all come out to fest.

a list, let me try from left to right

Tillandsia bulbosa - air plant on background (airplants are said not be to good for vivarium but this one has grown a bit. And i have VERY LITTLE air movement in there)

Peperomia meridana - (in the back left, i have a couple of these growing through out the tank as you can see)

Vriesea ?racinae? (brom)

Vriesea ella (brom on background)

Cryptanthus chocolate soldier (terrastrail star on the middle front)

Selaginella - Plana (in the middle near the back)

Aluminum plant (the tall plant with two big leafs in the middle)

Selaginella erythropus (unseen, below a brom)

?Tillandsia streptophylla? (another air plant on the tall piece of wood. Im not sure if this is the same plant as i have named it, becuase black jungle either doesnt have it any more, or changed the picture)

Vriesea pink cockatoo (brom to the right the tall one infront)

Neoregelia yellow devil (brom in the back)

Heres the plants that i have had that died:
Unknown air plant
Selaginella kraussiana 'Aurea' (Gold Tipped Club Moss)
And the current back ground plant i have in the middle is dying, i cant keep back ground plants alive for some reason.

I got my tropical pillow moss (like $8 per square feet, although its clumps and not a sheet) from mossman. I cant find his contact info, but you can go here:
http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=142499,145014&key=2003
click on his name and send him a message.

My moss took about 4 months before it started to look like was growing. I would highly recommend once you get it rinse it with water so the moss gets a big drink and you can get as many nastys out as you can. I wish I would have done that with all of mine. BUt the idea didnt hit me till i was about done. But right now at 6 months about 1/2-3/4 of my moss is looking like its growing.

You can see in the pictures of my tank how it settled of the months instead of looking real 'hilly'.

Your little plant on the rock appears to be a group of fern gametophytes (the little double "leaved" thaloid structures) and one appears to be producing an adult fern (the one with the third leaf stiking strait out).
