are my american green tree frogs and fire-bellied toads sick?

rebecca1980 Jan 03, 2004 03:05 PM

I was given two american green tree frogs and a fire-bellied toad for Christmas.
The frogs were originally totally green in colour but have now developed small brownish-yellow spots on their skin. Does anyone know if this is normal?
Also, I was looking at my toad today and noticed that one of his eyes seems to be shut and more retracted than the other, or perhaps not even there. One is wide open, but the other is not visible at all. Could he have lost an eye?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Rebecca.

Big question, one that everyone else is going to ask...

Are these frogs in the same tank?

If so, that is the source of all your problems and you should separate them immediately. Then follow it up on the proper care of these two completely different species.

Otherwise, please post all info about their setup, tank size, temps water, substrate etc.

They are in the same tank, but that is how they were sold in the shop. I understood (from reading various books and speaking to different people in reptile shops) that it was fine to keep them together. Have other people heard different?

No, Firebelly Toads have toxins that can seriously harm and even kill other species living with them. There are cases of nothing happening, but it seems that in your case the frogs are suffering from the toxins.

Please post water/temp/tank size/substrate/feeding etc., that way someone who knows more than I do can help you.

They are not compatible. Unfortunately, many pet shop employees are poorly oriented to herp and amphibian keeping other than what they are told by the managers. The larger pet chains are under fire for poor conditions, inappropriate mixing, and bad advice, although there are exceptions in individual outlets that may have some educated employees. I'm afraid you got some bum advice. I'm sure people here will cite all the the many reasons these frogs aren't compatible, including Fire-belly toxins, aggression, food competition, etc. Be sure to separate them right away, though.
