Question on Breeding .......

OneTwoManyHerps Jan 03, 2004 03:36 PM

Hello, as of right now I have a 67 grm tremper male and a 35 grm tremper tang female. Some of the questions I have are...

1) Is the weight of the female to light for breeding?
2) When is breeding season for leos?
3) What steps should I take to get them ready?

This will be my first breeding project and will be placeing the two (if ready) in a 20 gal. long critter cage with two moist hides w/ peat moss. I also know to leave the male in the cage befor i introduce the female for she will get used to his scent better. The cage will be the ideal temps and I will check the hides every day and mark the tops of the eggs with a_____? to know if they move in the incubator. I will use Albey's method of incubating during that time. As of right now the leos are in seperate tubs and haven't seen eachother every. I think I will only breed once with these two until the eggs hatch (cross my fingers) THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO POSTS!!!!1

in my oppinion the female is not big enough.she should be bigger because they relly dont eat when there gravid so they lose alot of weight. mine produce eggs from january to about may.mark the top of the egg with a non toxic marker. i got my female ready for her breeding this year.she weighs about 75 grams. and is 10 inches long.

1. She's much too small; wait until she's at least 45g. The bigger, the better. Many leopard geckos lose weight during the breeding season. She'll be laying eggs every 2-4 weeks for months so it takes a lot out of her. Give her some more time; you'll have better babies and a healthier mom-gecko for it.

2. Their breeding season naturally happens between Feb/Mar-Sep/Oct. People get eggs year round, though. I think some people manipulate light/temps to achieve off-season breeding, though.

3. Make sure temps are correct, food is offered at all times for her, and its well supplemented. Keep them separate until she's ready, or you'll have eggs and have to struggle to keep her weight up the rest of the year.
