Heat sources

VTEC Jun 04, 2003 04:11 PM

I have a 20 gallon long and on one end I have a uth and on the other end I have the heat lamp. I know that there is only supposed to be one warm side but what I do is turn off the light at night so the other side is still a source for heat for them. Would it be ok to leave the heat lamp on too or will that screw up their daynight cycle. Any comments? Also if you can please post your heating setup

Below is my setup.

I have the UHT under the rocks on the right. Above that I have as you can see a day light (60-20w) depending on the weather. I also have a red night light that I use from time to time on very cold nights. I have a Thermostat with its sensor located inside the bark tunnel sitcking up at the back in the centre, that is set to 83f.

Bear in mind this is a 67gallon viv (48x19x18).

Conclusion.. I like to keep one end cool and dark and the other end warm and light. That way they have enough hides they can go where they what at the temperature they want. They can hide or bask its all good.

leos don't really need a daylight cycle if they are in a windowed room. They are nocturnal creatures. One side should be 87 to 89 degrees declining down to room temp on the other side. A UTH is the best because it produces belly heat that is good for digesting food. I use a red light to supplement my UTH in the winter but I have them in a 65 gallon tank whinch tends to be kinda cool.

Mine are in a windowed room but with a tank thats 67gallons and just a 12"x12" undertank heater I can only keep it warm enough during the day with a 60-20w bulb. I have the "day light" on a timer that I adjust every other week or so to keep it intime with sunrise and sundown. They don't need it but I've heard temperatures and light cycles help them know what months there in.

I used the bigger watt bulbs in the winter and the red light for cold nights. The UHT stays on 24-7.. unless it gets over 90f at the hot end then the Thermostat kicks in and turns it off.
