SKINNY BTS! Needs to gain weight pronto!

katrick Jan 03, 2004 08:34 PM

I was just given a BTS that I guess was extremly underfed for a period of time and when i look at photos of other BTS, she is definetly about half the size of what she should be.

I dont think shes sick or anything, cause she has a great appetite and I am feeding her regularly leafy greens, bananas, strawberries, pinkies and other meats.

Are there any other foods that could give her some much needed weight quickly?

Is fish okay, such as canned tuna?

I've been reading a lot of different website guides and I am getting a lot of mixed responses on what they can eat.

Thanks!

As you wrote that it doesn't appear to be in poor health in any way, I would be more concerned with getting it to gain weight in a healthy way than just doing it quickly.
BTS are omnivorous, so almost all dark greens, lean meats, insects, some fruit, etc. should be part of a well-balanced diet. Too much fruit is NOT a good idea, though. And fish is not a natural part of their diet.
Good luck with it.

No fish, especially frozen and thawed. The best thing to do is get a high grade dog food, mixed veggies, roamin and a sprinkle of reptile vit/min supplement, blend it together, put into a syringe (without the needle) and place drops on the BTS mouth and when it licks it should want more. For really stuborn BTS you might have to rub the end of the syringe on the side of the BTS mouth while holding the skink firmly until it gets pissed and opens its mouth to bite, then place a few drops inside and it should start eating. With patience you can get even the most stuborn to eat a little each day. But if it is sick from worms or something else even this won't work, only vet advise and treatment.

First be sure cage temperatures are correct for digestion. Then use "Whiska's Original" or "Whiska's Crave" formula dry cat food sold at Petsmart, Jewel, Target, ect. Blue Tongues cannot resist this. Once the skink starts eating "Whiska's" on a regular basis start offering other foods in a separate dish. Keep the "Whiska's" in its own dish in the cage at all times. I have never had any health issues with my skinks on "Whiska's". Within one month you will notice change.
