Homer - Questions about your homemade misting system...

ridge Jan 03, 2004 11:33 PM

Homer, I was just wondering how you have the pump drawing water from your reservoir? I assume it isn't submersed but maybe has a hose? Also do you need to mount the pump below the reservoir? One last question, how noisy is that pump? Thanks for sharing! Dave

Dave,

You are correct that the pump has an intake hose and an outlet hose. The intake hose is currently attached to the lid of the water reservoir so that I can invert the reservoir (a 1 gallon jug) above the pump, as it doesn't currently have enough juice to self-prime.

However, the individual I got this idea from assured me that utilizing a transformer capable of 2 amps would allow the pump to draw water up to 15 inches, and would easily run 6 misting nozzles. So, I ordered a laptop AC converter that is 12 volts, 3 amps, and I am hoping this will allow me to place the reservoir below the pump (which I am sure will happen).

As for noise, it is a little noisy. It sounds about like a loud, imballanced computer fan when it runs. For this reason, I plan to somehow insulate the motor to reduce the noise. However, since it will only run for 1 minute a few times per day, I don't see this as being much of a problem.

Like I said in a previous post, if you are planning on using a misting system for more than 3 tanks, you should probably spend the $100 on a manufactured system. Otherwise, this does a pretty decent job for about half the money.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
