Hi, my name is Anna Timperley I am a student from Manchester England and a total beginner at keeping frogs,
I wonder if you may be able to help me? I have some whites tree frogs which I bought from a pet shop about a year ago they have been fine up until now then a couple of months ago they began to look ill.
When I got them they were small juveniles about 1cm I have been feeding them regularly with live crickets (I also used a vitamin and calcium powder from the pet shop to dust the crickets with) and they have grown rapidly. I had 6 in a vivarium set up with U.V. lighting, heat mats keeping the temperature at 80 and with a small pump moving the water they have plastic plants and pieces of cork to hide in.
I am a beginner keeping frogs and I have found it almost impossible to find any substantial information on caring for them, especially about diseases. Up until now they have seemed really healthy, eating well they have grown to about 8cm and they were all quite plump. Two of them have recently died! I took one of them to the vets before it died but they were unable to give me much help! I am worried that they may have an infectious disease and I don't want anymore of them to die.
The symptoms are;
Reddened bellies and legs
Stop eating and become very thin
Panting and gasping (it seems as though they cant breath through their nostrils properly)
They seem to shed their skin constantly and don't manage to do it properly
They become lethargic and stay out in the light
And then eventually they seem to become so weak that they die.
I am very worried as I have only four left now and I don't want them to become ill.
I also have three other tanks with square marked/Egyptian? toads(I am not sure what they are and the pet shop don’t seem to know!), European green tree frogs and some shovelnose frogs. one of my toads has also recently died it seemed to have similar symptoms as the whites but died much more rapidly one of its eyes also seemed to be swollen and cloudy! and 3 of my European greens have also died with no obvious symptoms very suddenly!
If there is any advice you could give me or if you know of any websites I should look at I would be very grateful! I hope that I am not wasting your time! I have tried to keep them in the best possible set ups and I have tried everything I don't know what I am doing wrong!! I hope you will be able to help me! Thank you so much for spending the time to read this
Yours sincerely Anna

I'm not really much of a frog person, but... Here's what I can suggest. Move all who have those symptoms into a strict quarinite so it doesn't spread to those who aren't infected yet. Red-leg is a symptom of many things, it's hard to tell. Maybe someone more experienced can elaborate. However, I've heard it's very contagious, so make sure to wash hands between tanks/animals, etc.

its red leg disease. They get it from if the tank is too dirty. try replacing your substrate every so often so that. and change the water dish at least every day.

is a good site for diseases

hi Anna, welcome to the frog world, i too havent had my frogs very long but im confident ive learned ALOT,from alot of very knowledgeable people whove successfully have been keeping frogs for years and years. I have whites tree frogs myself(3 of them) a red eye tree frog(im getting more), an an albino pacman frog, and many other herps and animals. Im gonna try to help you the best i can.

It sounds like your frogs have been and are suffering from red leg disease. The reddish you said they have on their underside,is it like bright red blotches or just sort of pinkish? you said you had 6 of them, what size is the cage they were living in?everything you have sounds pretty good i guess. what kind of ground(substrate) are they on? the other amphibians you mentioned, are they in the same cage or does each species have their own cages? i need to know more about youre setup and routine so i can help you.

Heres an awesome website for whites tree frog husbandry from a good friend of mine: www.froggie.info
