snake trays

t-bo Jan 04, 2004 01:58 PM

I was wondering if there was somewhere where you can buy the plastic type snake trays, big ones suitable for B/P and preferably windowed and with lids. Ive heard people saying about using rubbermaid boxes, but I cant see that they can be big enough for the snake to thermoregulate etc.. Also I live in UK and they dont seem to be available here.

Thanks for any help...

snake trays are the same thing as rubbermaids. I bought 43qt rubbermaids for $5US for each. Vision tubs with that floor space run 80 bucks each! its your choice.

Do you know where they sell these on-line, and are preferably able to ship to UK ?

Thanks...

That size would be fine. You could set up a rack system with that size.

My dad and I built this in one day... it uses 41q Sterilites, which are 34 1/2" x 16" x 6".

I have found that he heat is better contained and a better heat gradient is created when the sides are all closed in (ie. all one piece). Unless your room is heated to an ambient of 80F . I also found that the overall darkness of the racks that are all closed in produce a better feeding animal. I still use my open racks for the Hondurans though.

Just my experience. DON'T change what already works for you!!

Thank you for your input, I am still planning on closing in the sides. , My room is also self heated to whatever I want it set to, right now it's 82 days and 74-75 nights.

Thanks again, let me know any other suggestions you have.

If you have the room ambients that high, then the temp gradient will still be just fine. But I like the darkness factor, plus it uses a little less electricity, as less heat is lost to the air. Other than that though, people use the open systems just fine. It also allows you to see copulation, egg-laying, sheds, etc etc without opening the cage up, so an open rack definitely has its benefits!! Its all about personal preference, as well as each room/house/city/country is different. The mark of a successful breeder is one that can adapt to whatever climate and create the right setup.

If its working for you, I wouldn't change it man!!!

I also use a very very shallow hide-box. This has turned many of my females into eating machines!! They like to wedge underneath it! The just have their head resting out a little bit, waiting to pounce on any rat that I wave in front of them!!

I will work on the hides, seems like a plenty good idea to me. Take Care, and good luck this season Jeff.
