Personally I prefer planting them directly in the substrate as the roots will have much more room when the plants grow and the roots will also help to remove nitrates from the soil/water which will benefit the vivarium as well as the plant themselves. There are a great many choices available and your best bet would be to check out the offerings that Black Jungle has. They carry a wide selection of tropical plants that are well suited for the vivarium with size and growth in mind. Best of luck!!

i have to agree with bill. i would plant them in the substrate, it is better for the whole vivarium and is more natural. the plants will have more room to grow like bill said, and they will help aid in keeping your tank healthy. black jungle has a lot of nice plants, but are generally small when you get them. for larger plants that are just as nice check out what alex at custom ecos (http://www.angelfire.com/oh3/customecos) has and also ken of peace of tropics (http://www.peaceofthetropics.com). but black jungle does have a great selection of unusual and great tropical plants... they are all good companies, so go with whatever plants peek your interest the most. some really nice and easy plants to keep in terariums (in my opinion) are Philodendrons, Syngonium erythrophyllum, Syngonium rayii, Creeping Fig, Alocasia 'Elaine', Neoregelia bromeliads, and Cissus amazonica... just to name a few. hope this helps somewhat.
