New Pics of my Hognose.

Lyn Jan 04, 2004 02:59 PM

I have some more pics of Wilbur, the Malagasy Blonde Hognose. I am really happy with this little guy. He's letting me pick him up with no problems and does not seem to mind being handled. I have not tried to feed him since he was last fed at the store less than a week ago.

I did have one problem with him. When I picked him up on New Years day I mentioned that his one eye looked really cloudy. My friend who works at the store took him, wet her finger, and was able to pop off a stuck eyecap.

When I took him out yesterday I noticed that his eye did look better, but still didn't look completely clear. I've never had a snake with a stuck eyecap, but did the same thing my friend had done and sure enough, off popped another eyecap! This was from the same eye as the first one came off of. Now both eyes look clear.

I noticed at the store he was very defensive when being reached for. He seems much better now, hardly reacts at all when I pick him up. I figure he hasn't established his new home as his territory yet, but was also wondring if he was more defensive from not being able to see out of that eye?

Here are some of the new pics...

He really likes the piece of cork bark that is over his UTH. I measured the temp in his favorite spot and it's 87 degrees. Here he is peeking out from his cork bark cave...

Another pic...

He has a neat pattern of small dark stripes on top of his head. I love the gold in his eyes.

Thanks for looking at my pics!

I am planning to get a White's Tree Frog. I'm hoping I won't have a problem if he can smell the frog since their tanks will be in the same room. He's been eating mice with no problems according to the pet store. Do you think he'll smell the frog and decide he doesn't want mice anymore? Does anyone here keep both Hognose snakes and frogs? I'll be very careful not to handle him after handling the frog, you can't handle tree frogs that much anyways.

Thats a beautiful animal! Regarding your question about keeping hognose snakes and toads/frogs in the same room, it's not a problem at all. I have 9 westerns and 1 eastern in the same room with a few toads and it doesn't cause a problem with their feeding at all. As far as the eyecaps go, that is probably the reason the snake was being definsive, retained eyecaps greatly impairs their vision and I imagine that it is greatly uncomfortable! Good luck with him! I didn't want to give up on getting the frog. I have several pet stores and friends trying to find one for me. The Blue phase White's seems to be posing a challenge to locate. I've found them online but w/out pictures and I don't want to have a frog shipped during winter.

He's just a little guy now, not even a foot and a half. So I have him in a 30 gallon high. Basically the same floor space as a 20 long, but the added hight helps prevent escapes. When he outgrows this enclosure I'm leaning towards a 40 breeder critter tank. The old style ones really weren't secure enough for snakes, but the newer style ones are great. I just bought two of them for my Leos and was very surprised to see the newly designed lid. A great improvement.

Here is the left side of his current enclosure. He has a new Under Tank Heater, Aspen bedding, and a semi flat piece of cork bark over the heater to make a nice little cave. He has a rock to climb on. And some silk plants to make it look nice, and he can climb in them or hide under them.

Here is the right side. As you can see, the aquarium backer only covers the top portion. Hard to find a backer for a 30 high tank. That's the same rock from the pic above, another plant, and his water. I love these water bowls. They have a hollow area underneath to serve as a cool hide, even a little "doorway" for him to get underneath it!

I've posted this pic before, it shows his size in relation to the enclosure...

I have to figure out a humid hide to help with his shedding, especially since he had the problem with his eye caps.

He really loves this cork bark cave. High enough that he can get in and out easily, but low enough that he feels protected.

These are really bad pics, but he has explored the rock...

And hidden amongst the plants...

He's just an awesome little guy...

I have had trouble finding photos of these snakes. I found a care sheet on hognose.com but the pics on the photo page won't come up for me. Someone here posted pics of one he just got, and I did find a pic on one other site, but that's it. I think people are concentrating on the fancier ones, the red Westerns, and there are the Albinos, and now Piebalds. The Malagasy Blonde is rather plain in comparison. But in person he really is beautiful. The pictures do not capture his specks of light blue and overall dappled appearance. Hope you get one!
