vet transport...

lele Jan 04, 2004 07:16 PM

...I know this has been covered but here I am asking anyway!

Luna and I are going to the doc tomorrow morning and I need to know best way to transport her. I am in NH so it is cold, and of course I will heat the car long before we get in it, but what to put her in? Keep her covered and in the dark - literally?

as always, thanks,

lele

Lele-

Well I am in Ca so it doesn't to cold during the day here. I use a medium sized cardboard box, add a double thick paper towel to the bottom and tape it down. Then I add a small "Y" shape branch and tape it in place on all there points. On the lid I add a tape so that I can re-open/close the box. If it is very cold where you are you can use the same thing just keep the room temp up, or use a Styrofoam shipping box with the same set up. I also spray the paper towels twice to add some humidity. I don't have a box setup right now or I would have posted photos, sorry! Hope this helps!

P.S.-

If you have a heat pack you wrap it with one piece of newspaper then tape it to the top of the box for heat if you need it.

Hi Lele...

First, let me say good luck at the Doctors. I hope all goes well!!

Whenever I take Zoe to the vet, I take him a a critter keeper. It's a larger one, about 12"L x 6"W x 8"H. I line it with a tea towel (dish towel? The kind you dry dishes with, that isn't made out of terry cloth...don't want any caught claws)I usually put it into the microwave to warm it up a bit before I put it in the container...I'm sure I don't need to tell you this but: make sure it isn't too hot.
Then next, in goes Zoe. Then another tea towel over top of him. Also lightly warmed.
Getting him there is always the easy part...it's getting him home that poses more of a problem. By the time I leave the tea towels have cooled...Zoe is stressed from all the handling and so on.
I like to keep the towel right over his head, like a little tent. I don't want all the scenery flashing by as we travel to and from the car etc. to stress him out even more than he already is.

Again, I hope everything goes well for you and Luna. Keep us posted, I'm anxious to hear what advice the Vet gives you!

Thanks,

when I said I put "it" in the microwave...I meant the towel..not the critter keeper, (and most definately NOT Zoe!)

I have also used a small rubbermaid container with a lid to transport him as well. The good thing about those is, that it is dark, and if you aren't going far, it isn't ventilated, so it will keep the heat in. But if you're traveling any further than a couple minutes down the road, I don't think the no ventilation aspect is that great.

thanks to all of you! I think I will take a little from all of your suggstions! It is about 30-45 minute drive. I may ask them to nuke her towels before we leave to come home!

btw, Kim...I knew you didn't mean to nuke the kritter keeper or Luna! LOL!

I think that all of this has to do with her being gravid - she and I are both new mom's (so to speak) so hopefully I will understand more next time. Not breeding her leaves a bit more for me to "read" so this is all still a learning process. I still have concerns about the tongue problem, but I am not as worried as before.

thanks!!

but, I just wanted to clarify it, just in case somewhere down the line someone says I told them to microwave their chameleon to keep it warm.
Stranger things have happened I'm sure.

Is Luna old enough to be producing eggs already? I know absolutely nothing about female chameleons. Thank goodness Zoe turned out to be a boy, or I would have been a nervous wreck ALL the time.
