is there a medical reason why some igs are orange or is it genetic? I heard it was from eating to much protein.

Igs turn orange when they are mad and/or in their breeding season.

The too much protien thing i have been hearing a lot lately. Actually from Vets too. Then again the same vets are teaching students how to sex snakes and sent me a definate gravid female that turned out to be a male.

Anyhow, orange coloration is primarily breeding season and more often seen in males. However orange coloration can also be from their native ranges. A really good book that hits the natural history as well as what basic iguana shape comes from where is Hatfields "Green Iguana: the ultimate owners manual"

I am assuming you mean orange as in blaze orange like this big boy Oscar.

Breeding season will definitely bring out the orange in an ig, but it is not unusual for adult iguanas to be more orange than green. This photo is from last summer. Dexter is now in breeding season, and has much brighter colors (not to mention much grumpier and nastier...).
