I use white, non printed paper towels as a substrate. Not the most attractive but easy to keep clean and isnt as risky as some of the other substrates. Inside the cage you can design a desert type setup with a couple branches/logs and/or a couple level, sturdy rocks. Make sure all cage ornamentation is treated with a bleach/water solution prior to being put in the cage to kill any pests that might be lurking on them. *Rinse well before placing in the cage*. Also make sure all branches and/or rocks are placed in the cage so that they sit level (do not rock or move) and are sturdy so as to not fall on your dragon causing serious, maybe even fatal injuries. You will need a food bowl as well. My dragons prefer large bowls with little height. A water dish is optional. Dont forget your heat lamp, uvb/uva light and a thermometer. I am probably missing something. Hope I helped a little. LindsayMarie

i would suggest using bran...thats what i use...i got a 50 lb bag of wheat bran from a feed store (fedders feed in erlanger, ky) and i use that....its soft and digestible...although it molds when soaking wet and it is really light, not holding all the cage furniture very well....for a hatchling i would suggest paper towels, and when it gets older then use bran or playsand..because of the risk of impaction
