How often to feed...

Solaris16 Jan 04, 2004 08:14 PM

Just looking for a wide variety of opinions here.

How often would you feed a 2.5 year old corn a fuzzy rat?

All opinions are welcome.

3-4 times a month I would say....but I don't own an adult corn yet. I feed my 4-6 month old snake once a week now.

You could feed every 7-10 days, or even once every two weeks. I tend to think about how often snakes would really eat in the wild. I can't imagine snakes obtain prey as often as they are fed in captivity. PLUS, snakes in captivity probably don't get as much physical activity due to the constraints of their enclosures versus the acres of territory in the wild they are free to roam. I personally would feed once every two weeks. I don't like to power-feed snakes because I don't want them to develop health problems or be overweight PLUS when you have many snakes you consider the budget and costs. Also, if you decide to feed your snake more frequently, keep an eye on how often it defecates, as you don't want it to become impacted.

I feed my adult male every 14 days.

Around day 10 he is out looking for food, so I could feed him then, but I think it's good for him to be out roaming for a few days. Otherwise he would get no exercise (except when I take him out) and he would just get fat.

Also, I never feed any of my snakes unless they have already defecated their previous meal.

How big is the snake and the rat? I have a 1.5# corn (he is 5 or 6yo I think and about 4.5 ft long) that gets a 50 gram rat (3-4wk old)every 10 days to 2 wks. My younger corns get mice or rats...but I go by grams. One that is just a pound gets 35gram rats or mice about every 10days.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

I also have a 2.5 year old. A male snow. I give him a medium fuzzy rat every 10-14 days, but sometimes go as long as 21-22 days between feeds & he's fat, sassy & ready to breed in the spring.

my adults get 40 grams prey items every 7-14 days depending on the snake
