Redfoot's Eye Looks Odd...

turtle_22 Jan 04, 2004 08:48 PM

Please read this, see the photo, and let me know your thoughts.
I picked up my redfoot today and saw something that wasn't like this before. It looks as if the side of his eyeball, the membrane was sort of reddish and perhaps swollen? Looked almost as if it was trying to grow and cover the actual eye...but maybe that's not the case...I don't know. (on both eyes mind you)
It just looked odd to me, something's different. I'd appreciate your advice! He eats heartily always...kale lettuce (high in calcium), bananas, dried crickets, occasionally canned dog food.
He also always has fresh water which I know he drinks. I soak him once or twice a week and his feces looks OK...nothing strange there. Last month, his skin seemed a bit dry so I modified the conditions in his terranium -- got rid of this all-purpose carpet (that I had tried out for a test) and replaced with the typical Reptibark substrate, as that sustains humidity a bit better. I mist the substrate a couple times a week or so.
He seems fine all in all. I occasionally let him roam around the house for exercise (he's indoors for the wintertime).
This eye thing I just noticed today is bothering me though, and I'd really like to know if this is some sort of infection coming on or what?! SEE PHOTO: Sorry photo not all that clear...didn't want to the flash in his face:

Many thanks!

The photo is really too blurry to see the problem. May I suggest a few things? I would try increasing his soaks. Even everyday for a while. Also mist the enclosure more often than a couple times a week (or if you have a hide box for him get a little terrarium humidifier and run it into the hidebox so it stays constantly humid. This micro environment will let you not worry so much about misting the whole area and give him the option of moving from dryer to more moist areas in the enclosure (just like he will move from his basking/heat lamp area to a cooler area in the pen).

Lastly -- I personally (and this is just an opinion to all out there and not etched in stone) would be careful about letting him roam the house. If you put him on the floor keep him on a hard surface floor not a carpet and supervise his wandering. He could very likely eat something he comes across that might not agree with him (like a toxic houseplant or foreign material on the floor etc.)

Back to the Eye. If there is discharge or swelling of that reddened lid that gets worse or it does not improve at all after increasing soaking for a few days I think it might not be a bad idea to take him to the vet for check up just to be safe.
It really was just impossible from that photo to see what the problem (if any) was.

Good luck

Steve
