Sick African Toad

rambaldi Jun 04, 2003 06:53 PM

it started about 5months ago, with a cyst on the knee of one back leg. when it didn't heal, i took him to the vet and was given an antibiotic (baytril). it was harder than heck to administer -- the injected cricket usually died before it was eaten. anyway, i managed to get the toad to take in a couple of doses over a period of 2 wks, and the cyst seemed to decrease in size and be healing up, so i stopped the baytril.
within the past couple of weeks, the toad has gotten several open/bleeding wounds on his back. the cyst has also started to bleed a bit too. one back leg seems to be swollen with liquid, and his appetite has diminished.
i restarted the baytril 2 nights ago. he doesn't seem to have improved much, and i can tell he is uncomfortable.
i have been feeding him crickets fed with Fluker's calcium fortified gut stuff since i bought him (about 1.5 years ago)
the toad is in a 10gal tank with Jungle Mix dirt (sterilized soil, sand, vermiculite, pear moss, orchid bark and green tree moss). the water tray is filled with distilled water, and i put in 2 drops of Stress Coat.
and ideas on what is wrong, and how it happened?
thanks.

How big is the toad? A 10 gallon just sounds way too small for anything larger than an inch. How ofret do you do a complete cleaning on the tank itself? Perhaps there is something in the bedding that is making him sick?

Sorry he's not doing well

sorry, it's a 30gal tank. the toad is smaller than the palm of my hand.

i've taken all bedding out of the tank and have been cleaning the water dish every other day. this was recommended by someone else.

i have been giving him Baytril, and his older wounds seemed to be healing. but last night i noticed a new wound. when i cleaned out the dish last night, i did NOT put the coat protectant in the water this time. i will see if that prevents more wounds from forming.

a vet at Petsmart had recommended the coat protectant (same stuff that people put in their fish tanks). since there is no bedding and nothing to cause wounds, the only thing i can think of is that stuff i've been putting in the water dish.

thank you for your response.

How long were you to be giving him the baytril? If you could only manage a few days treatment and you were suppose to do it for twice as long, that can cause more harm than good. You are always suppose to do the complete round of antibiotics.
