Super Worm Question, I'm just full of questions! Lol

ByRandom Jan 05, 2004 07:19 AM

It seems that many of my superworms seem to die off rather quickly. They are about medium to large sized, with about 100 smaller ones in there from....God knows where... It seems that I find atleast 20 dead...dried up...meal worms ontop of their gut load. This is what I use:

Oatmeal
Rice Baby Cereal
Powdered Milk
Tropical Fish Flakes

And I blend it up to a coarse powder. Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong?

Oh yeah, I also offer fresh apples (change them out every other day) and fresh baby carrots (change them out every day).

Thanks guys!

Alright. Now this is just weird. Can Superworms mate and produce offspring without going through the beetle phase? I have not noticed a beetle anywhere in the container or around the house. But two weeks ago, I had maybe 7 smaller superworms. Now I have atleast 35 tiny superworms.....Too weird.

Give them more moisture. When superworms start dieing off in large numbers they are probably eating each other. Give them the apple everyday.

No the worms can’t reproduce. They have to morph into beetles first. The thing with superoworms is that they don’t pupate like mealworms. They have to be housed singly to pupate. This is why there are no beetles.

But that leads me to ask...where did all these little tiny worms come from?

Are you sure the worms are superworms? When I order superworms I sometimes get smaller ones. As long as they are superworms I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yeah they are smaller superworms. But the weird thing is is that I cleaner out the bin and there was like 7 of them. And now, there is about 30-35 of the small ones...

There were probably some smaller ones that finally got big enough for you to notice.

I've used baby cereal and powdered milk before, and I never liked either. Both would retain too much moisture, then dry up in chunks that got packed down in the bottom of the container. So even though it looked like the substrate was deep enough for the supers, it really wasn't because only the top layer was loose enough for them to swim around in.

Anyway, it seems like superworms are more apt to eat each other from overcrowding than lack of moisture.
