questions concerning gravid igs and vet visits

kamido Jan 05, 2004 10:21 AM

Steve and I think our little three foot and two year-old Kam girl is gravid for the first time. We've got a nesting box that we are setting up today just in case. Her appetite was crazy for a few weeks and since then she has been reducing the amount of food she's eating until she got to eating about 6 bites or so. Her food is barely disturbed the past two days. No visible wieght loss and she is definately not lethargic! As we were reviewing our igs for dummies book she was climbing all over the room, in and out of a drawer, up me jump to Steve and down him.
Anyway gravid or not she is headed to the vet later today. I am just wondering what vets do at this point if she is gravid. Exactly what questions do I need to ask him that I might over look?

Well one thing he should do is physically feel for the eggs...

You want to be sure that he has preformed emergency spaying. You also want to be sure he knows how to dose things to induce labor. And you may want to have a blood panel done now and after.

Im sure ill think of some other things when i get some sleep.

Thanks.
Visit went well (at least as well as it can with Kam getting mad at me for transporting her in a box.) She of course threatened the vet and tried to tail whip him.
He's not saying 100% that she is gravid but he did feel small lumps he thinks are early stages of eggs. Next week she's getting an x-ray to confirm. He also gave us Neo-calglucon to boost her calcium. (0.8 cc twice a day) Thankfully she loves it and licks it off the sryinge. We also are finishing up a nesting box today.

Our vet hasn't performed emergency spaying. However if she is gravid he is referring us for the rest of her gravid time to a vet at the U of I which isn't too far away.
