My BP struck himself...

nennywho57 Jan 05, 2004 11:13 AM

I got this BP from my brother about 3 weeks ago. We let him settle in and fed him last night for the first time. (we actually cared for him for 9 months about 2 years ago and had no problems) Before going after the rat (frozen) my BP actually struck/bit himself... as if he was the pray. Needless to say, I was a little startled. After about 10 min. he went on to the rat and fed normally. I did not see any blood from the bite - but did not want to get too close or handle him too much. My brother says he's never seen this happen. Any thoughts? We keep the warm end of the tank around 85 and he stays on that end most of the day. This is probably warmer than my brother had him, as he only had a low watt night time heat lamp. When I took him out prior to feeding, I did notice that he was warm to the touch - unusual. Could he have been confused by sensing his own body heat? sorry for the lenght - didn't want to leave out any details. Thanks!

I have had this happen a few times with snakes as well. As a matter of fact, it is funny you brought this up today. I was feeding my Anery Boa (adult female) and the SAME thing occured.

I simply think it is a feeding response. As we know, MOST snakes do not have the greatest of eyesight. They simply smell the food and react to any movement and sometimes that movement is themselves.
As long as (like you already said) there are no wounds, would not worry a bit.

Best of luck with you BP and take care!
