cleaning shelf liner ... what to use?

mismodliz Jan 05, 2004 11:36 AM

Any suggestions? I purchased the Duck brand liner from Walmart. Immediately, Telamon pooped on his rock, then put his tail to work and spread the mess all over the liner!

I wiped it up, but it stained.

What has everyone been using to get rid of stains? What is safe for him?

Thanks!

Ohh that's bad luck LOL. I used them for a year now and maybe had a stain once that would not come out cause I was away and let it set in to long. I usually get anything on them off with a spray bottle and a mild soap like dial antibac or dawn on a paper towel, and then rinse with warm water. If your afraid to soak in bleach just use a little on a wash cloth and rub straight on the tough spots then soak and rinse in hot water. A safer route for a tough stain if you have it on hand would be peroxide or oxyclean. Rub it on the stain and let it sit on for 10-15 minutes then soak in hot water. Try using regular dial or dawn antibacterial soap first though. Dawn is great at lifting stains (let it sit on for a while if you have too).

I know you probably know this but, if not you should take the liner out of the cage to use bleach, or if you have to let anything soak on the stain for any length of time. I know it's basic and your probobly wondering why I'm explaining this, but trust me some times people do some crazy things Didn't know if I was clear enough. The spray bottle and mild soap I use daily when they poo, and it's not a problem, but any strong smelling, or strong cleaning agents like bleach take it out of the cage and rinse real well. Last week I heard people say they where cleaning them with baby wipes which would be safe as a daily wipe up cleaner, and I think Grimdog said he uses Listerine which makes sense cause it does contain alcohol and is a germ killer. Just wasn't sure if you where asking what to clean with daily, or you had a stain you could not get out. Just didn't want you putting bleach in the cage with your beardie inside. Would not be a good idea

what concentration do you use for the antibacterial soap in the spray bottle??

Mattman Jan 05, 2004 01:54 PM

I don't put the soap in the bottle. I pick up what I have to first, then I spray it with water, and have the soap on a paper towel already just enough for the spot I have to clean. Then I spray again to rinse, and wipe up with a fresh towel. I fully soak the liners every two weeks. Poop I clean like above, and any dried pellets or greens I use a little dust pan and brush.

ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I will definitely take the liner out if I need to use the bleach. I will try your dawn suggestions first and see what happens. Thanks on the tips for everyday cleaning, also - much appreciated!

p.s. - I've found it so much easier to clean up after him since putting in the liner. He's really shedding right now, and I am even able to keep up with cleaning up after that!

I thought I'd miss the "natural" look of substrate, but turns out, I prefer the "clean" look! Thanks again!

I keep a container of unscented baby wipes by the cage for quick clean ups. They also seem to get the stains up, if you scrub really good with them (not 100%, but sufficient enough for daily clean-ups.) My shelf-liner is mostly white and I don't have any bad stains on it.
