Mangrove Monitor...

LizardL0v3r Jan 05, 2004 12:41 PM

hi,
never posted here but i read most of the posts. im going tobe getting a mangrove monitor in a few weeks from a breeder, he says it is captive born, but im not sure. its a male, about a foot and a half TL, very active when i saw him and held him, but i can see that the current owner doesnt really have time for him, the poor guys nails are crazy long, and he seems kinda skinny. i was just wondering if you guys have any suggestions, or personal accounts w/ this type of monitor, i've read alot about them, but not heard from many owners.

thanks.

Hey there I never owned a mangrove, but my best friend has two of them. I dont believe the person you are attaining it from told you the entire truth. From my knowledge I dont think anyone is selling true uscb indicus, but it could be that it was captive hatched in a facility in indo. Where they capture pregnant females and have them lay in captivity from the rather than catching babies in the wild. In terms of it having long nails indicus are kinda like the everywhere monitors of indo and northern oz. They can live in mangroves forests etc.... So granted they need the long nails to be able to climb and so forth in their natural enviornment. Indicus is not really known to be overly robust like a water or albig, but if it is skinny to the point where bone is exposed in the pelvic area then it is on its current that may not be taking care of it adequatley. Hope this helps ............my friends are sweethearts and have the potential to grow up to six feet someone has a picture of one that is huge but I dont recall who it is.
