There really is no right or wrong answer. Some people will tell you paper towels/slate/tile ie. nothing granular. Others will tell you that they've used sand and other granular substrates with out a problem. However, granular substrates run the risk of impacting your leo. I personally am using papertowels and plan to switch to tile in the spring. I figure, better safe than sorry. However, the one substrate that you absolutely can't use is cedar chips. I've been told the oils in the cedar chips do not agree with geckos. Hope that helps.
