Tank price confirmed - 46g bowfront with stand, glass top & light for $188 at Wal-Mart

arklier Jan 05, 2004 02:43 PM

Well, it's $188 and some change. Bought one myself. It's a Perfecto tank, with a Perfecto glass top, fluorescent light fixture and bulb, with a wrought iron stand that has a shelf near the bottom for putting those supplies and misting systems on. Great deal.

I've had a 45 gallon Perfecto for years and never had a problem with it. Plus you have to remember, water weighs about 8 pounds per gallon, and once you add in gravel and fish, 10 pounds per gallon. I doubt that the stuff that people will be putting in for vivariums will total even close to 460 pounds.

I had some perfecto tanks, I don't believe that they crack more easily then the others. But I perfer Oceanic and All-Glass tanks. I have several perfecto tanks and all are doing fine. Just my 2 cents

The sticker on the tank also advertised a 5 year warranty.

And then you must remember that every time you go to WalMart to buy something like that, you are denying that sale to a local small pet store, thus making it even more difficult for them to make a living and supply you with crickets and frogs and such, things that WalMart doesnt carry.

You might say small pet stores dont have prices like that. Of course not, WalMart buys crap like this in truckloads loaded directly from the boat dock it was imported from. Pet stores mostly have the higher quality stuff and most certainly have more reptile and amphibian supplies than Walmart. I know my store would at least do our best to match Walmarts price on this or show the benefits of a setup that may cost just a little more.

I'm not sure about how the rest of you feel about small privately owned pet stores, and not all of them are good I know, but if everyone goes to walmart, then small stores dont have a chance to meet their price.

My point is, give your local pet shops a chance first, dont just go to walmart. Many local stores like mine, would JUMP at the chance to TRY to earn your business over WalMart.

Sorry about my little tirade there, WalMart is the bane of our existance.

Everyone goes to WalMart eventually...if they die without believing in god.

Yeah, God forbid their be a place where lower income people can shop. In my opinion, pet stores are a complete ripoff. The retail and service industries have become a joke. You cant get attention until the clerk gets off the phone with their girlfriend...this includes fish and herp stores IMHO. Only a fool would pay 6 prices in a store where the attitude seems to be that they are doing you a favor by waiting on you.

If your in a weak herp market...then dont go into buisiness.

oooohhh...burn...
heh, talking about anywhere in particular?

I wonder where all our wonderful frogs would be if everyone shopped at walmart and no one supported induvidual breeders and pet stores?

nonexistant, that's where. Or expensive as hell. No offense meant here fella, but you need to keep your stinging comments to yourself unless you've been in that position. My family is doing what we love as a business, and anyone who has done that knows it is no picnic. A "weak herp market" doesnt play into the picture if you do what you love. You do it and do your best to make a living at it. Sincerity and customer service will lead to income.

If they give you that attitude, then by all means walk out and tell your friends, but dont badmouth all pet stores because of one prepubescent chatty clerk at your local pet store.

The pet stores you mention I may have visited in the past, as I have been in some that seem like that, but dont lump all pet stores into this category or you will be missing alot. Or better yet, with that attitude, I'm sure most pet stores dont really want your shining face present.

BUT, if you are ever in Canton, NC, please come into our store. It is not big, but I guarantee you you'll get a smile when you walk in and we will work with you in any way possible. We might give you a new outlook on the industry you SHOULD support as a pet owner.

Respecfully,
Matt

Sorry Matt...Didnt mean to offend.

I travel all the time, and you bet I will stop in next time I find myself in NC. It wasnt my intention to trash all family owned pet shops...and I didnt mention breeders at all. I stand by my "opinion" of the retail industry as a whole. Their are 1 or 2 stores in my area that I support with my hard earned cash, and yes its because they are friendly and helpful. but I'm not going to buy things like silicone and lighting from them. Home Depot, Loews, and Walmart come closer to what I reguard as a reasonable price for these items. You and your store are IMO a dying breed. This is a shame. I would never purchase an animal from walmart, but its my perogative to find the deals on raw materials where I can, so I have something left over for good quality where it really counts.

Sincerely, Dt

As the bumper sticker reads... Walmart, home of cheap plastic crap

I have to say your discription sounds more like every Walmart, K-Mart, Lowes or any other store of the sort I've walked in. Nothing like my local pet shop.

Whoever has the lowest price for what I'm after...that's where I buy it. I'd never buy a live animal from Wal-mart, but supplies? You bet!!

When Wal Mart starts to sell dart frogs, then I'll start buying pet supply from them I think we forget how we seen various animals in the petstores that got us interested in the first place. The internet does not get more people interested, it is the petstores that carry different animals and can provide good starting information. Bad petstores don't stay in business very long anyway. When we get more involved, it is then the experts and breeders that get our attention and not the petstores. My two cents.

Believe me, I'm not on some kind of personal crusade for Walmart, or any other retail outlet. A lot of this hobby involves diy construction projects, and Home improvement-type stores fit the bill for me.

When I'm looking for books on frogs or vivs, The herp store is where I go, same with foods, suppliments, cork bark, heaters,...etc. Its just a matter of shopping the right store for the products I need, and price ranks pretty high in my criteria for choosing where to spend my money. If I can achieve a significant savings, I'll go that way. I have taken great great risk in opening my buisiness, and if I had to count on the charity of my customers, I would be toast.
