Newbie Horned Frog Advice

chameleon2005 Jan 05, 2004 05:05 PM

Hi guys,

I`m considering buying an Albino Horned Frog shortly and I have a few questions if any one would be so kind to answer;

What is an ideal size viv for 1?
Is it better to keep them semi Aquatic or on bark with a water bowl large enough to sit in?
Do I need U.V light?
What Temps do i keep it at?(room temp or termal gradient?)

Many Thanks in advance

Phil

My experience is this: I have mine in a tank slightly larger than 10 gal, I keep her at room temp (about 74 degrees in my herp room, I have a UV strip light above the tank & I keep her in EcoEarth w/ a large water bowl. I notice she doesn't soak nearly as much as my dwarf pixie frog does & she's currently estivating, whereas the pixie is not, but both have slowed down eating over the last 1 1/2 months.
Hope that helps!

Ideally, 20 gallons is best. I personally like the half and half set up with a divider. Allows the frogs to soak as they want and my frogs seem more active when given a larger water area. Temps for young frogs are optimally around 80-85 with a slight drop at night. No UV light is needed unless you want live plants. Andy

First let me say that these frogs ROCK! They are awesome pets! I currently own two of them. An albino and a regular.

My albino is 2" long and 2" wide and my regular is about 1.5" each way or so.

I keep the albino in a 5 gallon long (same length as a 10) and i have my regular residing in a tank that is an odd odd size. It is 14" long, the 5 gallon is 20 inches. So im not sure what size that turns out to be. I plan on getting a larger tank for the regular pacman, but right now he is small enough to where he can fit fine.

As far as I have read you do not need UVB.

Temps should be aorund 80 degrees. Alot of people keep them at room temp (as did the store i bought them from) which is around 75. But id shoot for the 80 degree mark as best you can. Avoid using a heat pad as they burrow to get *away* from the heat. I use a 40watt in the 5 gallon and a 25watt in the other tank and i reach temps of 83ish directly under the bulb and it gradually goes down.

As for substrate. I use bed-a-beast about 2 inches thick. I keep it continually moist and they seem to love it. They dont really ever use their water bowls as it is moist enough in the substrate. Some said to me that this could cause problems like redleg but I have yet to have any problems with it, i change the substrate once a month.

Id like to experiment with a half and half tank. I was in a pet store and i saw a tank set up that had gravel on one side pertty high, then sloped down to just water.

snakeguy, do you recomend that setup? And what are your thoughts on my current set up with the bed-a-beast and my pacman not using the waterbowl at all? I trust your opinion and would liek to hear it!
