back from the vet...

Doc said she is definitely gravid. Saw no problem with her tongue so that is a mystery. The misaligned jaw may have always been that way, he is not concerned since everything in and around her mouth is A-OK!

She weighs 70 grams/2.5 oz. his scale is much more reliable than mine. Just out of curiosity, anyone else have female veiled around her age (just about 8 months)? What do they weigh? Sonia, do you know what Ohana weighs?

Umm...let's see...I think that was it - OH! He does NOT think there is any sign of MBD. He didn't do x-rays, etc. b/c he just didn't feel there was any reason for it (and the expense). Her grip is deadly so she has certainly not lost any strength!

I bundled her up and she was fine. We got about 4" of snow today but I had her in and out of the house and car quickly We ended up going tonight not this morning, so I let her bask for awhile before lights out to to ward off any chill!

Well, at least I will know with future clutches what to look out for. She still has not begun to dig but she's set up for when she is ready

holy moly...well, that's good news!!

How does the vet know she's definately gravid? Just by feeling her abdomen?

I'm relieved for you that things turned out on a positive note!

me too! yup, by feeling her and her body shape (and color, appetite change, too). I was becoming more positive about it b/c in just the last couple days she has ballooned out sideways. When I could she her ribs I was afraid she was losing weight, but they are just being pushed out so it looks funny.

I am hoping that the tongue problem is not permanent and that it is just a quirky gravid cham thing I guess since she (thinks) she will soon me a mom she deserves to be lazy if she wants to! LOL!

Hi Brandon,

She was not mated so she is gravid (carrying eggs), not pregnant (carrying developing offspring). When I first began rearing Lepidoptera I was confused by the different terms, but in the Lep world, we refer to a female as being gravid regardless. Because of their very short life span (3 days to a couple weeks), the female emerges form the cocoon/pupa with eggs in place and will abort them all (hundreds!) if not mated within about 48-72 hours.

Female mammals (humans, too) and reptiles do as well, but b/c our life span is a bit longer we don't get rid of them all at once. I rarely hear folks use the word pregnant for any herps and it seems that, like us Lep folks, the term gravid is interchangeable. I asked my entomology professor about the semantics and he said that although it is not a hard and fast "scientific" rule but when describing an ectotherm (cold-blooded) gravid is the norm. He agreed that this is due to the lifespan issue and that in the case of herps, they more often than not are bred.

I know you knew the difference b/t the two words but the
"scientist" in me finds it makes for interesting speculation

she is pretty thin. I don't know how accurate the weight will be because I have a cheap scale.

Whew! I was so worried about her and MBD.
If she had it I would have blamed myself since I raised her and set up her supplementing scheduele.

I think the branch hugging must be a gravid cham stress kind of thing. Her sister is still doing that even after laying the eggs but is eating and otherwise acting fine.
I just bought her more plants today because if I even enter the room she hisses and hugs the branch. Looks like she is slinking and trying to hide behind it.

I didn't think I overfed them but I am surprised both are gravid with an infertile clutch at only eight months old.

Ohana laid 32 eggs so at least it wasn't a huge clutch.
I have heard of some laying over 50 eggs and that is really rough on them.

You might try a drape across the front of the cage to keep her stress free till she lays her eggs.

Hi Sonia,

yeah, it really isn't a good time for comparison. Later though, after they are both beyond their puberty(LOL!), it would be interesting to see how much of a difference there is in their weight.

I took out her hibiscus and replaced with a nice, big croton which she is loving - much better to hide in! The ficus was fine for bed time but she didn;t seem interested in being there during the day.

I had been hanging a shower curtain on the door (with top front panel exposed) so she couldn't see the cats if they wandered in but could still see out fine thru the upper panel. She seems a little stressed today and her colors are a bit "angry" but I don't blame her after last night's adventure!

I'll wait until tomorrow to get any repta-aid or N-Cg into her, which the vet did recommend. I have to say she has had the sweetest temperment thru all of this - I've often found that the "runt" has the best personality! ha-ha! Stitch must have been born first and thinks he's king!

Well that's good news! A strong grip is usually a good sign (and I know I neglected to ask you about it earlier, sorry). MBD can get blamed for a lot of things as as we hear about it so often. We know so little about other illnesses in chams we tend to hover over the few we do know about.

I think being gravid may have an effect on her tounge. i remember i was in the reptile store when orion was prego and complaining about how she'd only eat mealies. a couple there had a gravid panther also and said that since she was gravid she had slowed down a lot and couldn't catch crix.
orion is a panther (as you know) but at eight months she was about 43 grams, if that helps at all . When she was gravid she went up to about 80 something i think.

my flies are finally emerging and I put the first one in her cage - she got all excited - missed it at first (I think she overwhelmed herself!LOL!) but got it second try. her tongue did go out further than it has for quite a while, so you might be right. It may be an energy reserve thing (?) - just guessing.

She's 70 grams so I guess she may not be such a runt after all!
