The cheapest way is to let mom do it. Works for me.

Rick, you let the mother incubate her eggs her self? I have heard of people doing this, but my ? is how does it work? Do you think it is better to let her do it? And what is your sucess rate. I'm just curious, I'm not knocking your method.

If the egg is fertile it is 100%. No problems with mom.

What about feeding her? She stays with the eggs the hole time, right?

BallBoutique Jan 06, 2004 09:31 PM

Mom stays on her eggs just like she would stay on her eggs in the wild. So she does not eat.

What do you do about temps?

Lost me.
Room temps are up to 88-92 when eggs laid.

Sorry, I meant once she lays eggs. Do you leave the temps at a stable, let's just say for the heck of it, 88?

Or do you just leave the cage as usual, with a hot spot...etc?

do you prepare any kind of box for her to lay the eggs in? i am not sure which route i will take. this is my first attempt at breeding anything so i want to do everything possible to make sure it is a success. thanks

If you're only having a couple clutches of eggs, I hear hovabators are good as long as you have a back up thermostat on them, such as a helix. The thermostat it comes with varies WAYY to much. I had one set-up and it went 2 degrees off both ways, low and high. If you get a helix it should work for you well.

Good luck.

So you did not like my redone incubator? Glad you did not need it since your male is not breeding!! LOL. I will take any female you want to put with my male. Talk to the vet about viagra for snakes. Maybe the cold front coming in gets him up and going.

Now get yourself well.

I did like it, it would be perfect for a couple clutches of eggies. The thermostat varies a bit, but it would be fine if a helix was on it.

My het caramel ate today, so lets hope that along with the rain coming gets him on a roll.

Oh, thanks for the "Get Well" wishes too, I still feel like crap but, excedrin is my friend, along with his buddy Nyquil and Dimatapp.

To answer your last question first: If this is your first incubator, it would be nice to have it up and running for a week before you expect the eggs to appear, so you can tinker with it without being afraid that you’ll destroy a clutch. The more experience you have with your particular setup, the less time you’ll need to do that in the future. Sometimes I don’t turn my incubator on until I see the first clutch of eggs. But I still watch it closely for the first few days to make sure it stabilizes properly. Of course, you want to get the incubator in as soon as possible now just in case there’s a problem or defect which might require repair or exchange.

I can’t recommend an incubator brand. I wasted money on a couple of very nice bird egg incubators many years ago which were too small to contain secondary containers with large python eggs. Since then I’ve used a homemade one which has worked well even though the components aren’t the latest technology.
