How often should....

Jawz Jan 05, 2004 07:48 PM

My beardie be excreting waste (poopin). Its a new beardie about 13 inches long and gets about 10-12 crix a day plus veggies and pellets which he only picks at. First couple days he pooped but lately he hasnt pooped for 2-3 days. He did when i gave him a warm bath. Id get a fecal done but sad thing is well i have no fecals to show.
somebody recommened using Acidtripophen or something like that to help clear him out.

Any sugguestions? Vet Visit (not sure how good they are in my area)

My beardie sometimes goes a week and sometimes even close to two weeks without going. I started to get worried so I took him into the vets and had him checked for signs of impaction, and I even got bloodwork done on him. They told me that he is a perfectly healthy reptile, he just doesn't go all that often. I have a feeling that since he was in a small cage at the reptile place I got him from (i think it was a 20 long shared with another beardie...he was about 12" long and the other was about 15-16"...the reptile place has since done some housecleaning so to speak, and now they keep beardies in larger enclosures), maybe he's just never wanted to go because he had to live in confined quarters with it before. I mean, with how many reptiles the place had to take care of, they were lucky if they were able to clean every cage every day (like I said though, they've since changed and hired help). I just started thinking about the psychological aspects of it because I adopted a neglected uro that will hold in her poo until I take her out of the cage. I'm trying to get her used to the fact that she's not still in the disgusting 10 gallon tank she was in before, and that I will clean it up when she goes. I also heard from a local petshop that a guy got a baby bearded that absolutely will not go in it's cage either. They tried keeping it in the cage for about a week and then as soon as they took it out it went.

My beardie doesn't usually go outside of his tank though, it just takes him a while. I think he may just have a wierd metabolism, or maybe the fact that he isn't eating his veggies is attributing to it. But that will soon be changed. This summer I'm weaning him onto a mainly veggie diet.

That's my take on it. I would still have him checked out by a good reptile vet if the problem persists.

As long as your basking area is around 90°F-95°F (air temperature), digestion should be good. If it's lower than that, you should up the temp a bit. It's not uncommon for them to go a couple of days without going. You might try offering more crickets in a feeding dish, if you're not already doing that... just make sure to pinch the cricket's back legs off first.

the temps are good around 100 degrees at the basking spot. I feed him about 12 crickets a day. I was told to feed less, like 8 every other day but others say keep feedin 12 a day. He also picks at his veges.

they give you. I would also point them in the direction of this website so they stop giving out ludicrous advice like that. If the dragon was a lot bigger that may be good advice but I don't think it's appropriate at 12".

I believe at that length your beardie should get as many as he can eat in 15 minutes or until he stops eating them. You should make sure the crix are fed a lot of nutritious food as well. He is trying to grow like crazy and 12 a day probably isn't allowing him to!

Good luck!

I agree,,, I'm still very new here but my guy is only 10 1/4" but eats up to 20 (3/8" to 1/2" crickets twice a day.

It's unfortunate that people who claim to be breeders and even those who just work in pet stores and sell the animals don't always know what they are talking about. It's a very frustrating experience.

Most of what I learned in the beginning from the breeder I bought my beardie from has been contradicted here - or at least had way lower #'s than what I've read from the obviously experienced users here. (i.e. substrates, insect quantities, worms, pinkies, and just basic info).

Thank goodness for this forum!
