hjk Jan 05, 2004 08:13 PM

I am so excited. I have heard so much about breaded dragons and think they are wonderful. I just got my first one tonight. I have been reading up on them, but have lots more to learn I'm sure. If anyone has any helpful tips they could share with me that would be greatful. Can be tips on anything. I havent thought of a name for him/her yet. First I wanna try to figure out what sex it is. Then I'll think of the name.

Congratulations on the new beardie!! I think the main two things is to have his temperatures correct, and use a calcium supplement with d3 like Repti-cal or Minerall I dusted on his crickets once daily for a growing baby beardie, and once weekly powder with a multivitamin like Herptivite or another multivitamin for reptiles. The proper temps should be provided with bright basking bulbs. The dragon needs a nice basking spot on one side of the cage with a surface temp of 105. Surface temp is the temp on the branch or rock you set for him to bask on. I would invest in a digital thermometer with a probe that they sell at like Walmart or Kmart. The probe can be taped to or set on the basking surface so you can monitor the temps in that spot. He also needs a temp gradient so the one side you make the hot end with his basking spot, and the other is the cool side around 75-80 degrees where he/she will go to cool down after basking. It would be nice to provide him a shaded spot on the cool side like a half log or something if it needs to cool down further or hide it can. Uvb light would be beneficial to your dragon. You can buy a fluorescent fixture, and buy a Repti-sun 5.0 bulb-highly recommended. They have been tested and do provide UVB. Many bulbs claim to provide full spectrum lighting, but some do not or do not put out enough. Repti-sun 5.0's do and will increase calcium absorption, and provide a nice brightly lit enclosure which will help his color and overall health, and appetite. Need any further help just ask. Visit as many bearded dragon websites and care sheets as possible Beautifuldragons.com has a great nutrition list for food items to feed your dragon, and much more helpfull info, and learn his/her needs, and correct ways to provide for them. Some sites for cheap supplies would be reptiledirect.com for bulbs & Calcium/vitamins, and his crickets can be bought from a bug farm like reptilefood.com which will save you bunches of money then buying crickets daily at the pet store. Beardies have big appetites. Good Luck and enjoy!! Beardies are really the best reptile in my opinion anyway
