switching live to p/k

zbass222 Jun 04, 2003 07:38 PM

I have a 01 cornsnake who will devour live mice... the only problem, is that now the mice she's eating if fed live are large and mature enough to hurt her... so, ive been feeding her multiple fuzzies that dont have teeth or claws that could hurt her... However, this is a pain so i'd like to be able to switch her to pre-killed larger mice which when i try now she wont look twice at... any suggestions would be helpful

thanks
zach

I am surprised it won't eat a pre killed mouse.
Are you killing it right when you are trying to feed your snake or a little while before.
If you whack the mouse and then present it to your snake while still warm and even possibly twitching it will probably eat.
If this is a little too much you can wiggle the dead mouse to simulate twitching.
just a couple of thoughts.

I kill the mice by placing a edged but dull object at the base of the neck and pushing down as I give a tug on the tail to severe the mouse's spine. I keep the mice in my room and as soon as i kill the mouse i walk with it to my snakes cage in my living room take her out and give her the mouse... i have tried moving the mousing, hanging it in front of her, tapping her on the nose with it, and braining it but to no avail. She has eaten a few p/k mice in the past but she just went 2 months without eating a thing until i fed her three live fuzzies the two days ago... It's not a huge problem for me to feed the live young mice but pretty soon that's gonna be alot of fuzzies!

Wow
I don't really know what to tell you.
Maybe after you get her eating fuzzies for a little while you can try hoppers. If you can get her feeding on a more regular basis again then maybe you can try a live fuzzy or hopper followed by a freshly killed one. Maybe the feeding response after one prey item will keep her in the mood enough to eat the second.
Sorry i can't be of much help
Jimmy
