Back from vet, need some more help please!!!

neon11 Jun 04, 2003 07:41 PM

I got her back tonight and the vet gave her panacur. It was said to give to her on a moist mealworm, she doesn't like mealworms to well,it doesn't sick to a cricket(already tried). I thought of getting like chicken baby food, mix in a little powder on put some on her nose so she can lick it off. What do you think or any other ideas.I hope this works,I do NOT want to lose her!!!! Thank you.

Panacur is properly admistered to leos in an oral suspension, administered in a specific dose via oral syringe, so you can control dosage. All panacur will cure is worms. Did the vet do a fecal and find worms?

Well I have only had her for 5 days, and the pet store policy is they would use there vet to look at her.I have the Vets name and number but could not reach him tonight but you can be darn sure he will her from me tomorrow!!! I want to know everything they did to her.I just want to get some medicine in her to start helping.

Carolyn,

I would ask the vet why they gave you a powder rather than measured oral suspension dosed for weight. If they did a fecal. Ask if it could be a bacterial infection? Coccidia? Crypto?

However...if that store has had a history of crypto the vet probably knows it is hopeless, and nothing you do will matter.

Unfortunately many vets are just not educated about how to care for reptiles. They give you panacur and send you packing...you can get panacur at Petco yourself (under the name "Safeguard", and take a wait-and-see approackh to see if it helps... Trouble is, babies need the proper meds quickly. Babies don't have much resilience, and a bad infection often does them in. Plus, they are so small, you need to be very careful with med dosing, or the meds could do them in. I am sorry, but you need to be prepared. Do what you can, but don't blame yourself if the animal dies, you did all you reasonably could. At least you can get your money back. Next time, buy a HEALTHY, well-started animal from a reputable small or medium/large breeder online or at a reptile show, or a reputable reptile pet store if there is one near you. One that is already established with fat in the tail, and at least 5" long. It may been like a lot to pay $30 shipping on a $30-$50 gecko or two, but it's still less than the cost of one vet visit for most people. And can you really put a price on avoiding heartbreak, or on your pet's heath?

I totally agree, I brought her home so she did not die at Petco,
I am prepared ( I think ) and I am going to fight for her until... She did eat again tonight,I just hope she keeps it down. I WILL buy from a breeder next time, but it is to early to think of that right now.Can I try the baby food?

It is fine to feed baby geckos chicken or turkey baby food.

did the vet tell you how much of the powder to use?

neon11 Jun 05, 2003 10:57 AM

I did talk to the vet and he said put a sprinkle in baby food would be ok. I did this now I just hope she keeps it down. I did feel better about him once I talked to him but I still don't think he is up on everything to do with reptiles, my search goes on,it is not easy finding a "good" reptile vet.One thing I did like about him is he told me if I buy another gecko to NOT get one at a pet store.Lesson learned .

see if the ninny knows how much of the powder to mix with distilled water to make it liquid. Then the proper dosage. I have never seen powdered panacur before. I know there is a formula for figuring out the dosage for the liquid panacur and you can give it to them via syringe in the mouth. I would see a real vet if possible and if not hope for the best. If it dies disenfect everything with bleach and water good before you get another.
