Feeding Watersnakes

SalS Jan 05, 2004 10:27 PM

What else can you feed a small midland water snake. I have one that has been devouring any kind of live fish. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I can feed him?

I would stick to fish but you could sporadically offer a fish-scented frozen-thawed pinkie mouse. My Nerodia will generally take them every couple weeks and it's a good supplement to their diet.

Stay away from amphibians as they usually carry large parasite loads.

What feeding methods did you have to use to successfully get them to take scented pinks. I have tryed scenting for My clarkii and T.p.rubrillineatus with no luck while my N.c.cyclopion would take them when ever offerd. What methods would you suggest I try ?..........Scott

My clarkii are all ravenous feeders and will grab anything that smells like Rosey Red minnows. However, they generally won't swallow mice with any sort of hair on them. I usually thaw the pinks inside a zip-loc bag in hot water, give them a gentle hand rinsing to diminish rodent smell, and rub Rosey Red minnows over the head of the pink. I offer the pinks to them while wriggling on tongs and they take them every time.
