Eggbound? This could be getting serious...help

masterplan Jan 05, 2004 11:23 PM

So my female, who is pregnant, has gotten to the point of not eating (for approx 10 days), she is listless, and barely moving. This is really starting to worry me. I fear that she is eggbound.

If so, what do I do? How can I tell? She has not wandered the bottom of her cage like I figured (and hoped) she would. I did set up an egg-laying pot for her and provided climbing branches to it, but she doesn't evn glance at it. She just seems to be drained. She isn't even afraid of me anymore. If I open her cage, she stays in one spot, hugging the branch.

Please let me know your experiences with this same thing, what you did, and the result.

Thanks~

I went to a lecture by Dr. Tom Greek, reptile specialist, at the Pomona show about this. He was very encouraging. He has a lot of experience saving egg bound females.

I have a gravid veiled myself, so I'd asked him - how do I know if she's egg bound? He pretty much listed all the symptoms you describe -
1) not eating more than several days
2) listless
3) unresponsive

Take her to a vet right away! The vet may be able to save her.

Take her to a Vet and giving liquid calcium from the vet may help.
They can get eggbound if they do not have enough calcium to support making the eggs. I would ask the vet for Calcium drops to give her.

Any idea where I could score some Calcium drops? Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can score some calcium drops at THE VET. You really need to take her ASAP. The drops alone will not save her from dying eggbound. I'm sure the previous posts meant calcium drops IN ADDITION TO other medical care. She is your responsibility. Either take her to a vet, or go ahead & put her down in a humane order. Don't make her suffer.

I know...I know...it's just hard to face a vet bill of $250 so I wanted to exhaust all options. But, I ran out of ideas...

I spoke to the vet and he is coming out Thursday morning. He tells me that she may be okay. She and my male mated November 29th so she should be laying eggs around now. He told me to soak her in a warm bath and to leave her in her egg-laying container overnight.

She is big but she is still feisty. When I took her out for the bath she was mad. She gaped and flared all of that, so that was a good sign. She is now wandering her egg-laying container looking for an escape.

I'm praying she pulls through. I'll let you know how the vet goes.

One thing you left out was how long she was gravid. this could also serve as a good indication of wheter she is indeed egg bound.

November 29th was the day she was with my male so it must be since then.
