I have a somewhat embarassing question

bouncyjulia Jan 05, 2004 11:24 PM

My baby corn snake has the most unsual eating habits. Since I've gotten Diego, he/she when eating always bites onto the rear of the pinky. Always the rear, never ever the front.

Diego's eaten about nine pinkies total. Every one of the poor things are bitten then cosumed butt first. My bf's ball python always strikes at mice / rats heads first. In fact every feeding picture I've seen shows snakes eating from the front.

Is this kind of behavior normal?????

Everytime I go to feed Diego, my boyfriend asks how my little 'assmuncher' is doing. Sheesh.

Thanks for your help!!

There isn't really anything to worry about rear end eating snakes. The only problem is with larger mice, geting butt first is harder because the fur provides more resistance. However, this being said, you snake shouldn't have any problems eating even adult mice butt first, it will just take him a bit longer than if he ate it head first.

when you move up feeder size(well past due IMHO, my neos from July are eating juvies or adult mice) that should change because the animal will begin using the direction of hair growth to locate the front.

Way past due?? You don't know how big or small her snake is. I have some 03's on pinks still because they are late summer babies, and aren't big enough for larger mice. Also, my 8 month olds are on fuzzies, and they are all growing well and doing great. No reason to rush them, I figure. They get enough to keep them growng big and healthy, and I don't want them developing fat lumps by age 2.

As for assmunchers I think it's pretty common when they eat pinks to do it backwards. They do figure out which is easier as they get older, and when the mice start showing up with hair and big back feet, the snakes are pretty good at taking it the easy way. My snow did eat a rat fuzzie backwards once, took her forever, but she did it. All head first since though
