Is slate a good substrate?

I am temporarly having to use cedar chips because i cant get to the pet store is there anyways i could put down some slate tiles and not harm them?

Yes. Slate works great! I use it in my Leo's tank(s) just be sure to keep it clean. and if you have the textured slate and it has kinda a pattern or design make thast patter or design, etc. go in the same direction. This gives for a really nice look. Oh and the slate absorbs heat very well too....just don't let it get to hot

Yeah i can. It may take me awhile cause i am kinda doing three things at once. I am answering post trying to set one of my extra ten gallon tanks up and well the last one doesn't really count, I am watchin t.v.

Leo's CANNOT be on cedar chips. The oils in the cedar chips are very irratating to them. I know you said you haven't been able to get to the pet store, but put down paper towels for now. Remove the cedar chips asap.

Cedar chips contain an oil which is toxic and DEADLY to leos. Hopefully you have not had them on there too long and there is not too much damage to their organs yet. You need to remove them from the tank and throughly clean out the tank to remove any oil or vapor residue. Yes slate is a good substate, until you get some use paper towels.
