Handling Leopard Frogs

chalinmak Jan 06, 2004 03:01 PM

Is it normal for frogs not wanting to be picked up? My frogs hide from me whenever I come into the room and literally lunge themselves at the side of the cage when I try to pick them up. My cousin had a White's Tree Frog, and she could pick it up and handle it all the time.

Is this something that comes with the species or is it something that I can fix?

The frogs are fine. You are doing something wrong. Frogs can not distinguish predators from caretakers too well, especially jumpy species like ranids. You should not be handling the frog anyway. It stresses them and any oils or foreign agents on your hands seep into the skin of the frogs. Handling can be done with a dip net and should only be done when changing the water or cleaning the setup. Andy

leopard frogs are all very scitterish and quick.Alot of people dont keep them because of there needs and because there very jumpy. They also need very large enclosures to be able to jump around enough.

Leopard frogs are not a pet to handle. Like Andy said, their skin is very permeable and will absorb any impurities in your skin, which could be a bad thing! Also, leos are VERY skittish to begin with. It's basically a display-only frog.

I only handle them to make sure they are OK. And they have a 30 or 40 gallon tank, we are not sure, it was a gift from a friend.

I have a hard time catching the around my hose sometimes; they dodge under my shed and under all kinds of things. Thay ARE very skittish. But very beautiful and fun to catch. They are very easy to keep though-room temp, no special ligting
