Tripoding Bosc?

Lucien Jan 06, 2004 03:09 PM

My bosc monitor, Kiros, will actually tripod. I didn't think they could do this from some comments made by other people on this forum? She'll hold position for a couple of seconds before going back down again. I've been unable to snap a pic as of yet but I'm sure I can get one eventually. And usually she isn't leaning against anything.. she'll just... stand up.. look out her cage and go back down again... Chalk it up to unusual behavior maybe?

Mine will do that too, but only if I lure them with a snack. I have two small ones, about 2 feet each. The female I had earlier couldn't do it, she was bigger and much heavier. Perhaps they usually are too fat to do it?

My Bosc Xanax will do that on occasion, usually if I'm trying to do something that she doesn't like--she'll ge up on her hind legs (supporting herself with her tail, of course) and hiss. The first few times she did that I stopped what I was doing, so I think she got it in her little reptile brain that that was a threat display that could scare the big ape-thing away. She's getting a little heavy to do that these days, though.

Kiros is on the heavy side but she's only 9 months old at the moment... though I have slowed her feeding down already so she can utilize some of what she's got stored up in her growth. She actually does the tripoding fairly frequently when she's curious about something... She'll do it when offered food.. or just when trying to escape her enclosure..when looking at something she can't quite see all of... or sometimes for no apparent (to me anyway) reason at all.. though she must have one. I find it somewhat amusing to see her do this... though, like I said, someone on here said something about them not being able to tripod.. or were the only monitors to not have been observed performing this behavior....

I have four Boscs and out of the four, only my female (Cyndell) tripods. She will tripod for food or curiosity. She does it when she hears my voice, but cannot see me. So, maybe the person that made that comment about them not being able to tripod, didn't have much experience with these monitors (coupled with the fact that it doesn't seem to happen with Bosc regularly) I don't believe that it has to do with how hefty the monitor is either. Cyndell is about three feet and pretty chunky. She would be considered over weight by most monitor keepers, but she is an eating machine and burns everything right off. Everything else aside, it is pretty neat to watch.
