travelling/moving with iguana...

shortydsm Jan 06, 2004 03:23 PM

I don't plan on travelling w/my ig of moving until the end of May, but I was wondering how I would travel with my 4 foot guy? I was thinking of getting one of those travel carriers for cats/dogs, but it seems like he would get cramped and/or fidgity. Plus when I move, it is either going to be 800 or 2300 miles away from where I am now, that's 1 or 5 days of driving. I know this is happening in 5 months, but I am just trying to prepare early!

Where are you moving to?

I like the large carrier next to the window, so the iguana can see out. Yes, they do get figity, but that is better than you worrying about them digging in the fire wall or wandering under the brake petal.

I am either going to move to southern CA, where I'm originally from, or go to the Tampa area in Florida. (I'm in Reno, NV right now, I'm going to graduate from college in May & get out of this state).

I moved with my 2 igs from MI to NJ in March a few years ago - a 2 day drive. I used a cig lighter adapter to provide warmth with heating pads. I used carriers the size of dog crates for the move. I had the carriers up by the windows so they could watch. One ig watched the entire way, the other nestled down at the bottom and said to wake her when we got there! I chose the route based on pet-friendly hotels - most welcome igs (they don't bark!). Be aware, some igs get car sick so be prepared. Dress lightly and crank up the heater.

Carsick? How can I tell if he gets carsick? Also, where can you find those cig adapter things? I have heard of them but never seen one.

I got the adapter at one of those car part/supply stores. My igs have never gotten car sick but I suspect they throw up - my vet warned me before I moved.

It's called a power converter, and make sure you get one that's rated for whatever voltage you're going to use. If it's just going to be a heating pad, then you don't need a powerful or expensive one. Mine was about $45 dollars, best thing I've bought for Bud.
