Here is a pic of my "mutt" flame texas ratsnake......

Spardawolf Jan 06, 2004 04:24 PM

I didn't know that she was a hybrid when I bought her, I bought her becasue she is pretty. I have 10 corns and 1 BP, and when I looked at her she looked to me to have the Texas Ratsnake features. I have been in this hobby for only 1 year, and am still learning. Any input on her pic would be a great help. Does she look like a hybrid to you?

I believe he started the TX Flame Ratsnakes. I thought they were intergrades but I could be wrong.?

The originals were indeed bred by Mark Bell. From what I understand he produced these, by breeding the Luecys and the Normals. The person I got her from has some adults from this cross. So my impression is, that she is actually not a mutt, but a new color morph. The breeder that I got her from is still researching them. I may be wrong, but that is what I was told. I don't know how to contact Mark Bell, so I am going on the breeders word. Thanks.

Is good. I know Peter personally, and I am absolutely positive that he will not intentionally give you misinformation. He will
do the research that he says he'll do, and let you know. Of course, he will be relying on the info that he gets from the person that he got the adults from.
I have seen the adults, by the way, and they are beautiful animals. I have one of the babies...looks just like the one in your pic. Will you like yours less if it turns out to be a hybrid? Just wondering. I'll still think mine is just as cool.
I'm not all that hung up about hybrids or intergrades, although I know that Peter will want to find out the best info that he possibly can so that he can accurately represent them.
Good luck. Duffy

I got her because she is the only one that caught my attention at the show I was at. My husband and I both thought that she was extremely pretty. I am not all caught up in the hybrid stuff either. I posted on here to see if anyone else had any, or knew anything about them, since I never heard of them before. A few of the reponses I got were helpful, but a couple of them basically said, at least to me, that she was no good, because she was a hybrid, therefore, a mutt.
I do not have any problems at all with Peter, I have since been in contact with him, and he is going to send me some more info on her. In fact, I plan on buying a male from him, at the next show. He was a great guy to deal with, he even showed me pics of the adults he has. They were EXTREMELY beautiful.
I look at it this way. I like her, and I liked his snakes. Whatever she turns out to be, hybrid or not, she is staying. And I am going to get a mate for her.
PS...Why don't you post a pic of yours, I would like to see it.

I'm really glad to hear it. The whole hybrid debate can get pretty heated, and I guess if you are in "the business" you have to be careful, and try to know what you have. I will be really interested to learn more about the flames. I have mostly ratsnakes (yes, I count my corns!) and since I don't have any yellows or 'glades, it would be neat to know if the flames were part one or the other. Actually, my "greenish" rat albino would be part black, part yellow.
As for Peter...He's the best. It's his "fault" that I'm into snakes, by the way. And he managed to convince my wife that they would make good pets without even trying. He has become a good personal friend (I have spent HOURS in his snake room), and I just have the utmost respect for him and what he is doing.
As for a pic...I'm still in the stone age, as my 13 year old says. No digi cam yet! Have to get one, though. My wife is an artist, and starting to really get her work out there, and that's one medium we will have to explore.
Good luck with your new snake(s). Duffy

This is definitely not a new morph. Tom Dew had them years ago. Maybe Mark Bell got them from Tom or perhaps the Zerkles?

Did Mark get his original leucistic and normal breeding stock from Kathy Love by any chance? LOL.

What a nice looking youngster. Does this snake have pink eyes? (It looks like that from the picture.)

Spardawolf Jan 08, 2004 02:45 PM

And it was very hard to get a good pic of her. I probably took about 10 before her color actually showed up. She is actually more orange than the pic shows, she is kind of colored like a creamscicle.
Thanks for the kind words.

The pink eyes tell you a lot. What you seem have is an amelanistic (albino) Texas Ratsnake. It may still be an intergrade, in fact it looks like what you get when you cross a texas with a yellow. Since it is albino, it will be hard to tell. I hope you will post more pictures of your snake when it gets older. Is it a male or female?

I have started to collect E. obsoleta's myself. I have blacks, yellows, grays and Texas rats. My Texas rats are the orange varient. I think they are great looking snakes myself. I will be looking to breed mine in a few years when they mature.

Spardawolf Jan 09, 2004 08:08 AM

In fact I plan on going to the next show in my area to pick up a mate for her. I have always thought that the Leucistics were gorgeous, and am hoping to get a male as her mate. I recently had a hatchling male, but I traded him back to the person that he came from, as he had a very bad temperment (and I have small kids who like to hold the snakes) and he also had "bug" eyes which I didn't find very attractive. Peter's snakes all had wonderful temperments, and are beautiful also. I am what you would consider a newbie, as I got my first snake 1 year ago. I have 10 corns, 1 Rat, and 1 BP. I love the looks of the rat snakes, and their temperments. (I guess you could say I have 11 rats, as corns are technically red rats) They also come in such beautiful colors. Eventually I plan on doing some breeding, after much more research and waiting for my babies to mature. You all have been so kind, and informative, thanks. I will definately be on this forum alot more now, checking all of your gorgeous snakes out and learning more from you guys.
